Wanting advice on steel shafts
This has been bugging me for years. Does anyone know a method of how to prevent steel shafts from rusting or at least slow it down?

Naval Jelly (I call it the pink stuff) will take the rust off. You paint it on, wait and spray it off with water. Dry them well, and get a chemical rust inhibitor. That will keep them for a time. Make sure they are dry after you play
Eventually, replace the shafts
Keep it in theshort grass!

Naval Jelly? is that the stuff you find in your belly button?
I've never heard of that and I reckon I'm not going to be able to find any, in the UK at least. I've been using a fine layer of silicon-based gun oil but it's not really good enough.

Try in a marine shop or anywhere they sell boating supplies. I know this sounds strange but that is what they use it for is on boats. Hardware stores may sell it.
Light sandpaper (400 grit) and some protectant would also work.

the best product i have found to clean and protect any kind of metal is flitz metal polish...if you cant find it where you live you can order it on line at www.flitz.com i have seen flitz pull rust from underneath the blueing on a brand new gun plus it will keep it from rusting for a long time.....DaveComment

To me, rusting shafts signify one of 2 things. A) your clubs are too old andd new ones would be a good investment or b) the clubs are poorly keptComment

You could try (a very messy solution):
Buy a couple tubes of clear silicone (window caulking), and coat your shafts.
I haven't tried it, but theoretically it won't effect playability, and should last for a long time.Comment

I clean my clubs after every game and coat the shafts with a cloth wet with WD-40 (or Duck Oil).
To get rid of rust pitting try this:
Get a bowl full of Coca Cola and a piece of tin foil.
Scrunch up the tin foil into a loose ball.
Dip the foil into the Coke
Rub the wet foil on the shaft. Most spots should disappear (exceot large imperfections.
The phosphoric acid in the Coke starts dissolving the aluminium in the foil, which is deposited onto the steel (the acid conditions form a very weak electrical cell) and looks upon first inspection like chrome.
Failing that, Brasso usually does the trick to get rid of the brown staining at least.

try mothers polish. I have never had a shaft rust on me.....go with a graphite shaft. I ahve to agree....time to get rid of the 1973 ben hogans.....and fix the roof in your garage!
