hi
what about gary player still playing well at 72, he plays at least 4 rounds every week and has traveld more miles than any other golfer.
he dont need the money but does it because he loves the game.

There was only one Player who truely truely loved the game and that was bobby jones...He once lost the US Open by 1 shot because during the final round he called a penalty upon himself and later he was quoted as saying " i know no other way to play the game "........that was love
hi aftord
a bit like darran clark at the k club when it was rained off and when the started again he said his ball was in a better spot and took the shot he would of the day before with a wedge and not a long iron to the green, think only golf has the code of fair play that we all try and uphold, from the pros down to the high handicap players.
yes bobby was some player and what a true amature. i know he was not short of a few bob but he did play for the love of it and for the win not the prise money. i am also sure he could of won a lot more if he wanted to as well as he picked where he wanted to play.
moe was another great player but was scared of being in front of the suporters after a win and making a speech. make him give up when he was just at his best.

It seems to me that the difference between the euro team and the usa team is comittment. let me explain.
The majority of the american players on the US TOUR are playing soley for the large pay checks.
The players on the EURO TOUR are striving to be the very best that they can be, regardless of pay checks.
You only have to look at the difference in in world ranking points between Tiger Woods and the next US TOUR player and you will notice a huge gap.
The big difference between tiger woods and the rest of the US team is that he is continually striving to be the very best and until the rest of the US team adopt this attitude they will never beat europe.
Aft.
Not sure I buy this, as golfers I think that all the Americans are trying to improve their games and be the best golfers they can be, I do not think that you get a tour card (and keep a tour card), a pay check or get to the level where they are at by doing anything but working on their games and improving.
Now you can argue that they do not care as much about winning the Ryder cup as about winning the John Deere classic, which may be true, on the other hand even though they do not get paid for the Ryder cup, but making the team and playing well gets them more exposure and helps secure endorsements.
I also think that this is the first year Tiger has come to play, his attitude about this event has been the same (I thought that would make a lot of diference but was wrong)
Phil works extremely hard on his game, but he does prepare for majors way diferent then he prepares for the Ryder cup.
You also have a bigger gap between Tiger and the top Europe player in the world rankings (Furyk and Phil are 2 and 3, While Luke Donald is 8th).
Greg.
Unless you failed to notice. you were dominated this time also ( exact same score as 2 years ago ).
It is a well known fact that US players are very rarely successful outside of the US these days( except Tiger ). why do you think that is ? ( bet he doesn't answer )
Aft
( team spirit is not my issue .... just the desire to be the very best ,and not very rich )
I guess I did not realize that US Players are rarely successful outside the US. If true my guess is that there is enough money to be made at home instead of traveling all over to play. I think Woods has made an effort to travel simply to increase his worldwide exposure and assist Nike and his other sponsors.
But if you look at the last opens since 2000 (since that is one tourney americans attend) Woods has won the last 2, Dimarco was second last year, Monty was second in 2005 couples was 3rd. But 2004 and 2003 were won by Curtis and Hamilton and 2001 was won by Duval. 2000 was woods again and 2002 was Els, so you have americans winning 6 of the last 7 years. Woods winning 3 but 3 other Americans have won and no Europeans.
hi
thats a good point but i still think the open if the number one for any player to win, and i think there is always a good field of usa player there and sometimg 35% of the field, not so much now but still many come over to try and make the field and lots of good player dont.
its still open to anyone that wants to enter.

I still admire tiger for still even playing this game competitively, he must have so so much drive and determination. It would be so easy to just get lazy and give up with MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of money in the bank but he is such a strong character and great person its showing that he really is play golf to actually WIN! And not for money! I think he and vijay singh are the only players that actually play TO WIN and not for the money!
I think the only thing driving Tiger, is what has always driven him, JACKs record, he really wants to beat that, I sure he will, be interesting to see what happens after he does, if he still has the same drive, then again there may be some pimply face kid, that is still in school right now that may come along in a few years and just take the game to another level, seems like we have one every twenty years or so. I remember back when, everybody said, no one would ever play as good as Jack, then Tiger showed up. People forget, as big a phenon as Tiger is now, Jack was the same way in his prime, only the competition I believe, was much tougher, otherwise his record might have been unbeatable.

Tiger still plays because he wants to win.
Take away all the millions and he will still want to win.
It's in his nature to want to be the best (although it is an advantage when you actually are the best).
As for Vijay.......hmmmmmm.....
I have no time for him (great golfer though he is). He cheated, and got a ban for it!
I hate cheats.
There is no need (or excuse) for cheating.

Thats why it is only 6 of 7. Duval, Hamilton, and Curtis= 3 + 3 from Tiger =6 american victories, Els is South African that would be the 7th.
I was not the one who claimed that US players were rarely successful outside the US (not only claimed but stated it is well known). Granted their Ryder cup failings are well documented but you seemed to implied that such was true of all golfing contests.
Just curious what that is based upon given that they have made a strong showing in the most important overseas golfing tournement? Or did I miss read your posts, it did not seem to limit it to team events.

Bob
why do you only quote stats from the british open?
why , with only 1 week to go before the ryder cup did only 8 out of your 12 have passports.?????...
You are a pathetic nation that is built upon a self important attitude..
you are second best in everything despite your size....you are a nation obsessed by personal gain and you are strangling from your own greed.
europe won because we still hold dear the true meaning of team spirit..
go and piss up somebody else's drainpipe.
