    Letting them through

    I have some rules I try to follow when letting a group or individual play through. I play at clubs that allow singles to play on busy Friday afternoons. Naturally a single will always be catching up to someone to be let through and therefore slowing down play each time this happens. One rule I have is if there is nowhere to put him, in other words there are several groups ahead of us, he has to grin and bear it. Hit a couple more balls each hole and be patient. Some people are very liberal about letting people through and I try to be reasonable, but it really slows play down for everyone. But if you and your group are playing exceptionally bad, you need to help a brother out. I also would rather ask a single to join up with us if we have room rather than let him through with a crowded course ahead.

    Another peeve of mind is letting someone through on the first three holes. I believe in waiting at least three holes to see what is in front of us. Many times you catch up with someone by then and find out they have two or three groups directly ahead of them so you haven't accomplished much.

    Any thoughts.

    I don't really let singles through, especially if I'm not in a foursome. As per the rules of golf: A single has no standing on the course. If I'm not in a foursome, I don't mind inviting singles to play along. Even then, after a couple holes, I don't mind them playing 'through'. But to outright let a single play through? No thank you.

      That is no longer the case. All groups have equal standing and a single player counts as a group.

        i for one am never letting any one through ever again! the number of times i been left waiting for 10-15 minutes while the group up front dick around totally oblivious to anyone else on the course.
        also sod's law dictates that as soon as you let someone through their game falls to pieces and so you suffer again!

          That may be all well and good according to the rules of golf. However, how many groups are using said rules (or have even looked at a rulebook) during a weekend round?

          Don't get me wrong - I'll now change my own personal philosophy, and allow singles to move through as though they were a speedy group of more than one; but I don't know how many others will recognize a single's standing.

              just read your post
              i will expand on what i meant!
              this morning playing solo i warmed up and arrived at the 1st tee at 8-30 to find 4 lads using 2 bags and 1 putter just past the red tees!
              i watched in horror as they played military golf LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT!
              they eventually reach the green where they are the putting as though the british open title hangs on every putt.
              i teed off 22 minutes later!
              i endured this for 4 more holes till i shaped up to hit my tee shot as they were walking down the fairway at which point they begrudgingly let me through and that was 5 holes played in 90 minutes!
              then ive got a 3 ball behind me all playing well bombing drives right behind me then when i let them through they are losing balls left right and centre taking ages looking for them and so back to square one waiting around!

                That's OK mate - was only joking about the cruelty; but I'm sure that the play through curse really does exist.

                Strange thing was that for a while in that round (its a 9 hole you go round twice so playing orders can change) I was following a two ball with just one bag who wouldn't let me through so I just practised chipping and putting on the green I 'd finished while I waited which got my short game into such a nice feel that I did 'nt mind the delay one little bit.

                The couple behind though had a nice idea - having gained 2/3 holes on me, and having seen what was happening - they just played the short Par 3 three times until I'd got a hole and a bit ahead again.

                  last week i had 39 in the front and par the 10 at 11 it was a dead stop causing me to stop my roll it took about 20 25 min before i got a chance to play shit was i piss 6 on 11 then back to par on 12 lost it on the 13th with 8 game but in the end 84 my thoughs are for those beginner is pratice on the driving range and go for a walk at night
