  • To tee or not to tee ?

When playing short par 3s with irons should you use a tee?.There seems to be 2 thoughts on this 1/ tee up to turf level to give a perfect lie or 2/ play as you would do of the faifway with a downward stroke taking a divot. Opinions please

Tee it up to ensure clean contact and take a divit ensuring you have hit down on the ball, there is not need to tee it up so high that you hit the ball on the way up like hitting a driver, tee it low and take a divit.

Its a matter of personal preference - I never really practice hitting short irons off a tee - only off the grass so I pick the best piece of tee and make sure the ball is sitting nicely on it. Teeing the ball up, no matter how low would just play on my mind so I dont do it (and I know with a iron down Im going to hit the ball pretty cleanly anyway)

I know some pros that hit a small crease backwards into the turf with the blade of the iron , then sit the ball on the lip of the crease.

The correct way is to use a tee when ever possible. This gives you the best possible lie to hit from, with, or without taking a divot.

Now in this case I don't practice what I preach. I only use a tee when I use my driver. I just feel more at ease at guaging my distance not using a tee from my 3w down. Dumb, but true on my part GJS
