  • Getting in the Zone?

I dont know if you guys are the same, but some times i seem to be in the zone! thats is when i hit the ball long and straight, sink putts and have sand saves. the difficulty is to get in the zone or more importantly staying in the zone for 18 holes. any tips?

    Re: Getting in the Zone?

    Hi,

This is how I see it:

When moving to the ball we have a bottle of confidence that is empty, we need to fill it with positive thoughts by using our pre-shot routine. If the bottle has any room left for negative thoughts they will fill it, then self doubt creeps in.

To fill your bottle with positive thoughts:

Carry out a checklist of your pre-shot factors, such as:

    1) Examine the lie of the ball to determine what shot is possible

    2) Asses the wind and other factors that will affect the flight of the ball

    3) Designate your target

    4) Calculate the correct yardage and club selection.

    5) Visualise your ball flight to the target

Once the bottle is full and you have a clear picture how to play the shot complete your routine that allows you to trigger your golf swing into action. This can be any physical action you repeat to start your swing routine, a dip of the club in your hands, a tug on your glove etc.

With a well rehearsed pre-shot routine you can make the process habitual and learn to get into the "Zone" that blocks out negative thought processes.

Don't focus on the out come of any shot, or putt. If you focus on the outcome, and it turns out to be less than your expectations, you will most likely create negative emotions. Don't worry about the outcome of the shot, or putt after it leaves the face of the club. Start your positive focus on the next shot, or putt.

By being positive with your emotions, you expect to play well. By playing this positive way, you leave open the possibility of playing a series of holes while in the zone of great play.

I play all my rounds of golf three holes at a time. In other words I play 6 sets of 3 holes looking for a score of par or better in each of those 6 segments of play. I don't reach that expectation as much as I'd like to anymore, but sometimes is better than never. However, if I play 3 holes well, there is nothing that tells me I can't play the next three just as well or better.

Now if I have a 3 hole stretch that is less than my expectation, then it is over after that 3 hole stretch, and perhaps the next 3 holes will improve due to having a fresh start. GJS

          Hi slf,
Definitely its the routine. But in this routine we must have the same basics. i.e. grip ball position, stance etc. Routine to me is making oneself do the same thing on every t box, same thing on everyfairway shot and putt. If you can discipline yourself to this it automatically cuts out unsure thoughts and negative thinking. When this becomes habitual, your game will improve no end.

          Cheers, Robert
