  • How to fix distance?

    Hello everyone
I have been golfing for a couple of months now and I am not getting the distance i've been wanting. These are my yardages for my clubs.

    04 Callaway Big Bertha

    PW - 80 yards
    9 - 95 yards
    8 - 110 yards
    7 - 125 yards
    6 - 140 yards
    5 - 150 yards
    4 - 160 yards
    3 - 175 yards
    460CC Driver - 210 yards

Is there a way to increase my yardage or is there something that I might not be doing right? Any advice would help. Thank You!

Incredible, last year I won closest to the pin – and my distance for a 5 iron was about the same as yours 1 used to get 152 yards. I shot I think 125. Your distance is remarkable for someone who has just started. I took lessons all summer and with better forum and a proper pivot my distances, especially with the irons, went up considerably by two to three clubs.

As you go along, and get better (presumably) you distance will get better. There is no substitute for lessons; even if you get a few half hour sessions – or even 15 minutes. By so doing, you have an idea on things to work on you so u don’t entrench too many bad habits. I had to “unlearn” some of my bad habits and that has hampered my scores. I have been watching Jim McLean’s 8 Step Swing Video. It is a little advanced for a beginner – but you can take it at your own pace – I think it well worth the time and effort – I wish I had found it earlier – it not only informs you of what you ought to be doing at each point in the swing – but the major errors and their causes, and cures.

Good for you – you are off to a very good start!

P.S. I would watch as many good swings as I could both old and new - initally my idea of a good swing was too rigid - there are more than a few ways to get it right.

Well, having no idea about your age/strength/flexibility/athleticism, your distances might be fine.

That said, those are the distances of a guy that hits with his arms. You're probably squaring your hips at impact to brace your body for an arms hit.

You need to learn to pivot/turn your hips/rotate.

Try this drill to feel what I'm talking about:

Grab your club in your hands. Grip it as hard as you like. Have a friend grab the head end. Using your arms, try pulling your friend over. (Your friend is welcome to resist the pulling).

Now, after you're tired of trying to pull your friend over, try this. Hold your arms still, and just turn away from you friend. Turn your hips and shoulders away from them, and watch them come.

This turn with the body produces your power.

One thing you might try is a weighted swing trainer. I have been using one this summer and have gained around 15 yards on my irons. I've noticed the difference more in my mid irons. My 7 iron used to be 150 yards carry now it's dropping in right around 165.

i agree with canadian that a swing weight helps, its is also good in the winter when you cant get out to play, if you swing just 10 mins a day you will find a diffrence when you start next year of 5 to 10 yds per club. again the weight helps in stopping you swing to hard and its something you have to build up to over time. if you try and find weights the runners use on there ankles you can use them round the shaft where it meets the club head. they do work well and are cheap, try wal-mart of someone like that. it lets you use every club in the bag. driver to wedge so your swing gets tested with all the diffrent shaft lengths. and even if the weighs side up and down on the shaft its ok as a good swing keeps them hard againt the hosel.

Walmart also has weights for irons and drivers that velcro on over the head.
