  • Hybrid Loft Confusion???

I Have A Hybrid With 19* Loft And Is Labeled A 3 Iron But Some Hybrid Makers Label Their 19* A 2 Iron. Is This The True Loft Of A 2 Iron Or A 3 Iron? How Could They Be Both? Isn't 19 The Loft Of Regular 2 Irons? Finally Is It Better To Use 19* Or 16* From The Tee If You Are A New Player And Struggle With Driver And Fairway Woods?

    It's a trick question.

It's the loft of a modern 3 iron, but an old 2 iron.

This is the confusing part about buying irons today. A 5 iron isn't a 5 iron, just because it has a 5 stamped on it. The newest TM irons have a 25° 5 iron - most other companies' 4 iron. And why? SO that you can hit a 5 iron while everyone else is hitting a 4 (or, if one buddy is hitting a pre- or early 80's set, his 3 iron).

      hi
the ping eye wedge was 50.5 but the g5's wedge is 46%
the ping eye 5 iron was 28.5 and the g5's 5 iron is 27%
like lowpost said the clubs had all been delofted and i think thats why adding a extra wedge to your set of clubs helps so much. your sand wedge use to be about 57/58% and now are more like 53/54% so adding a 58% or a 60% wedge fills the gap that was left. thats also why we all hit a 7 iron more then we did 15 years ago as its really a 6 iron.

As for what club is better, obviously the 16 degree is meant to go a little further. I would use the lowest one that you have confidence in hitting. So if you do not have confidence in the 16 then use the 19. The extra 10-15 yards will not make all that much diference in your approach shots, but being in the fairway will.
