Re: who is the best golfer of all times

    hi lowpost
here in mussleburgh we have the oldest course in the world and on the old 8th it had a bunker 75 yard long and 25 yards wide, it had steps down into it and you had to hit real high to get out it was 18 feet at its deepest. can you imaging using a old style club and a feather ball to get out of there.
don't make course's like that now lol

Of course history shows many incomparable great golfers but once in a while step out there thinking of yourself as the greatest, just for fun... Yes, when you hit that rare great shot, it feels like you are great, too (especially in a tournament)...

Re: who is the best golfer of all times

Once in a generation or two there aspires a golfer who has something special about them, I don't mean "special" in that they earn a lot of dough or attract the best sponsors, I mean special in the fact they have attributes that reflect a love and determination to excel against the odds.

My candidates for this are, in no particular order:

        Moe Norman
        Lee Trevino
        Count Yogi
        Bobby Jones

          hi
i think when thinks of who was the best golfer of all times there are a number of things you have to think about, with Bobby Jones you have to take in the equipment they had at that time and there was no sand irons or wedges as we know them. it was in many ways a different game to what we play.

when you get to the 70s you always talk about Jack Nicklaus but you also have to talk about the great players he played against to win his majors and tour wins, if you see the number of majors that Trevino, Watson, Player and Palmer won and thats not counting Irwin, Floyd, Kite, and thats only 3 of the USA player that were wining and all cost Jack majors. we also had Seve and Faldo and Greg Norman that took more wins off Jack.
all of them at the top of there games and winning and you never knew who was going to win between them,
now you have tiger and he must be the best athletic golfer off all time and is without and question the best golfer of the last 10 years but does he have the same standard of competition as say jack did in the 70s.
i think it was harder for Jack to win as he had so many player as good as he was at that time but i don't think we have any players able to compete and challenge Tiger week in and week out.
Tiger does play bad and lose games and if he had better standard of golfer then i think not only would his game rise but i think he would of lost a few more .
who is the best. i don't think that can be answered as its not a level playing field.
how would Tiger have done in the 70s when an open win only earned you £5500 and the likes of Trevino and Player turned up a games knowing if they did not get in the top 20 then they had no fare home.
i think you can sat in the early years the likes of old Tom Morris and Vardon with the best and then Bobby Jones took over as the best in the world.
then after the second world war you had Hogan and Sneed.
then Palmer ruled the world in the 60s.
the 70s Jack was the best with a number of world class players close at his heals.
then we had Seve and Faldo and Langer and in Europe Monty, and in the USA no one dominated till Tiger came along.
i don't think you can have a best golfer of all time, maybe it should be the best golfer's of all times
          cheers
          bill

Tiger Woods is the best golfer of all time, Hogan is the best ball striker, if he could have made 10-15 footers the way tiger does he would have won 30 majors. He had to hit it to 3-4 feet to make birdies, although he was real good at doing that. When he won he never had to make anything outside of 3-4 feet, but if he could putt like Tiger imagine how much more he would have won.
