  • Irons!!

I have been playing about five months and need advice on my two iron sets. The first set I bought used was Tommy Armour EQL irons from 10-15 years ago. I hit these great even though most of the grips needed replacing. They are cavity-back irons and I believe they are midsized. Two months ago, wanting a newer looking set I purchased some Accura irons ( I believe Taylormade clones) that are oversized with heavier shafts than the prior irons. However, I hit better distances with my "old" Tommy Armour irons which are smaller and supposedly "less forgiving". I thought newer and larger face meant easier to hit and longer distances. I am considering ditching these clones and getting new grips on my Tommy Armour's and using them. Maybe clones or oversize irons are not for me. My swing speed with five iron is around 80. I also considered the fact my old irons are lighter so maybe I need graphite shafts?

Those Tommy Armours are going to be a better club than 95% of the "knockoffs" out there. There is a reason they're called knockoffs and it is not because they knock strokes off your score.

Thanks one of the reasons I replaced them is because the grips were bad on them. I just thought I could hit oversized better but that does not seem to be the case. I believe even with the name brands that I would do better with midsized irons than oversized.

The EQL irons had another thing going for them: They are the same length. This means 1 swing, 1 ball placement all the time.

My suggestion? Get them regripped, and go back to them.
