  • Liam Update..........

    Hi Guys and Girls,

Not sure if this clip will work:

As some of you know I am a very proud parent and just thought I will update you on Liam's progress, He has joined the county squad and played the last game of the season still aged 10 and the youngest player, he lost 2 and 1, but played well although a little nervous. He now benefits from free golf lessons with the county coach and has been working on his backswing for more width, I have hopefully attached a clip for your purusal. His backswing is looking good and I am sure you will agree the load into impact is Tour standard.

Thanks for viewing if your interested and sorry if I am a pain.

    Ian,

That's a great golf swing, he should go a long way. And: don't apologise you are rightfully proud of his achievements.

            Liam,

Nice swing - appears free and powerful. I do see 2 things that I believe should gradually be addressed. 1) Lack of resistance of the left knee on the backswing and 2) as low post mentioned your hips tilt up on the downswing creating a large reverse C on the downswing. This was the teaching in the 70's but found to put too much strain on the back over time. The belt buckle should remain level going back and through which keeps the hips level - not tilted. Check out the book I mentioned in another post "The seven laws of the golfswing" by Nick Bradely and you will see some excellent visual images of what I am talking about. Mike.

                Re: Liam Update..........

most of the swing faults are coming from the club itself. the club he is using is way to long for him, he would get more distance with clubs that fit him, i did some measurements on the screen his club would be like someone 6 foot tall trying to swing a 60" plus driver, that's way to hard on any ones body, IAN get him some clubs that fit him or are ya afraid he is gonna wip ya, just kidding, but it will definitely help fundamentally and health wise.

                  Re: Liam Update..........

when the clubs are too long you have to learn how to feel and swing the club, that is a good thing and will really assist in impact alignments, hear the compression the kid gets? The kid has a good swing and better impact than most anyone. So to some it does not look technically correct but by the time this kid is 15 he will woop most of our butts on the golf course just by swinging the way he is.

Ian, does he give dad a run for his money yet?

you do you want to risk injuring his back he is 10 years old. he has a violent move into the downswing that will cause injury, if he used shorter clubs he wouldn't have to use so much of a lunge at the ball and he would hit it further just because he could move the ball up were it is supposed to be and hit the sweet spot. i just hate to see some one injure there back, from personal experience its no fun

Just looked at his swing, he is gona have serious back problems if he is going to keep swinging like that!

                      That really is VIOLENT!

                        Re: Liam Update..........

Thanks for the comments guys, A few points I would like to address,

Yes he played to 18 last Saturday although the tees are a little forward now due to winter setting in here.
I know his clubs are exactly 3 inches to long for him, they are mens regular shaft and our pro cut two inches off and he grips down the shaft about two inches, the county coach advised that this will be ok as he has played so long and is very strong, also he need regular shafts due to his swing speed as you can see if you pause the clip the load he carrys into the downswing is nearly warranting a stiff shaft.

The county pro has said that his head stays down unusually long after impact, very Lee Westwood was his exact description, not really a back issue, however I do agree he looks a little uncomfortable after impact.

Thanks for all your kind comments Liam and I really appreciate your support and your comment give Liam confidence as I hope all our comments help each other.

                        Kind Regards

                        Ian.

2 inches off is not near enough, the club is almost shoulder height on him from what i see on the video, its not a strength issue, its an injury issue. he has a great swing but it would be alot better if he didnt have to swing a sledge hammer. what does he use for irons? he should be using some thing that matches his size, that way it keeps every thing close in swing weights and he dont have to swing a mans swing weight.

                            Hi Wildwilly,

Liam has always had perfect fitting clubs since he was 4, he started with childs clubs then moved to cut down ladies etc, now he is 4ft 8 inches, with two inches cut off a mens graphite shaft SSI cobra irons, the County coach who did them for him says the weight is ok, they are very light really, certainly compared to mine. his driver and the wood he is hitting in the clip is a Cobra composite which is possibly the lightest club on the market, again cut and weighted perfectly for him as the lift can be completley lost if to much is cut off, and lead tape needs to be added to the back to assist loft, his do not because they are cut just 2.5 inches which is the maximum that can be removed without upsetting the weight. We have saved all the cuts-offs to put back later.

We think by summer next year the clubs should be perfect.
