    Playing Order In An Ambrose (or Scramble)...

    Good Morning All.
    Just a question, in an Ambrose event, regardless of the number of players in the team (2,3 or 4) is there a rule about the playing order within the team...? IE: Once a ball is selected by the team as being the best ball and position from which the teams next shot will be played, Does the person whose ball is selected have to play first...???
    I don't believe this is the case...
    We played a 2 Man Ambrose at my club last Saturday and I over heard some discussion about whether or not the eventual winners should have been disqualified or not because of this "ruling"...

    In a scramble, I don't think it matters. Once you select the ball you're going to play, you all hit from the same type of lie in the same area - the only 'honours' are for those who are still away. Who chooses to play first has no bearing.

    Let's change the scenario within your ambrose: You're on the putting green. Who putts first? If there's no rule as to who putts first, then I wouldn't assume there'd be a rule as to who tees off first, or hits the 2nd/3rd/4th whatever shot first within the team.

      I agree, I don't believe a rule exists covering order of play "within" any scramble team.

      Apparently the team is free to decide who plays in what order within the team off the first tee and it seems to follow that once a prefered ball is selected, the same logic follows and the team can again choose to play in whatever order, within the team, as they see fit.

      Unless of course there is again some "local match committee" all governing statement in effect at my particular club that I was unaware of prior to hitting off...

      Bottom line, to my knowledge, no one got DQ'd...

        I agree with the above except, I have been in scrambles where it is stated up front that if you decide to play out of a bunker the player who hit it in the bunker must play first (i.e where it lies) then the others can rake and place their ball before hitting.

        I also suppose that the event could have special rules concerning that the players ball you select must play the shot down and can not place it, have not been in such event but that would seem to mandate him hitting first.

          I have always played where the owner of the chosen ball plays it as it lies first. That is what I understand to be a Texas. In a Florida the best ball owner doesn't play that stroke but is back in on the next.

            aaa - I have heard of the Florida as you have stated it; the 'chosen one' doesn't hit their ball.

            I remember a Texas scramble being that you pick the best first shot, then everyone plays their own ball from there.

              Texas scramble as we play it here in Sweden is when you have to choose 4 tee shots from each player in a 4-man team and then you have an additional 2 tee shots you can choose as you like.

                I reckon if you google texas scramble you'll find as many variations as there are cows there.

                    In the US, typically the playing order within a team in a scramble is at the discretion of the team and can be changed at any time, on any shot, for any reason. This is a major strategy aspect of the format.
