  • Aiming at a target

    From my journal:

I was doing some experimenting today. I wanted to see if their was something I could do to see the shot line a little better.

I took my selected club and put it under my left eye chest high and extended it. I am left eye dominate so I closed my right eye. I lined up the shaft on the ball and target. I moved the shaft to the side to find a mark ahead of the ball to line up on. Low and behold when I stood over the ball the shot didn't look quite right. I trusted the shaft line and hit the ball on a line right at the yardage sign. It landed just short. I hit about 10 balls with different clubs with the same result. It was if I could see the line to the hole on the ground and all I had to do was line it up and hit it. What a revelation!! The front of the hole was playing tricks on my eyes and I couldn't see the true line.

Comment: This was about 10 years ago, I was a 17 hcp at the time. I still line up shots this way. I hit a lot of greens after I used this method. Keeping a journal can help you remember the things you sometimes forget when you were playing well. Take the time to write down your thoughts on the game. Who knows if your young you can pass it on to your kids!!!

    Golfbald,

Don't ever leave. I read everything you post whether I'm wondering about it at the time or not.

Can you explain a little more how you are lining up the shot.

Not sure from the post where you are standing.

Behind the ball aiming the club like a rifle?

      John,

That is a good analogy. You are standing behind the ball so yourself the ball and target are on the same line. You would put the shaft in front of whichever eye is dominate for you down about chest level. Find a mark on the ground ahead and behind the ball this is the aiming line. remember to take into consideration uphill and downhill lies, the target might not be the pin. Uphill lies aim right, downhill lies aim left. The shot will naturally draw or fade.

I whitnessed a guy today putting tees into the ground ahead and behind the ball.
It too me a while to work out what he was doing. Making his own marks to get the line to the target.
He was getting some nice straight shots... (until he got to the back nine, 15 inparticular, because of a nasty croswind).

          Thanks Golfbald

When i was out on my first round the boss got me to hold the club in front of me horizontal so i could look down and line it up with my toes when i thought i was in position.

I did it an invariably i had to adjust my position so that the end of the club was pointing at the target.

Is this a valid check for you foot position?

            Aiming left of target

I always use a cheater club when I practice; I find it ingrains my direction automatically so I can concentrate on ball striking.
When I am on the course, if I want to play a straight shot, I aim left of the target, remembering that if you aim at the target, you will always hit to the right and risk coming over the top.
I believe the brain being our computer will always compensate for our aim. In other words, if we aim to the right, our brain tries to compensate and pulls us over the top in an effort to get back to the target.
Another way to look at it, think of a train track running to the target. one rail of the track is the body to target line and the other rail of the track is the ball to target line. If you want to line up the ball to the target, make sure your body is aimed left about 10 yards. If you line your body to the target, the ball will always be right of it unless you pull it which will cause a push or a slice.

              Hey, I belive your right.
Today I found that my ball was always floating off to the right when I tried to line a straight shot.
What I ended up doing was twisting my club ever so slightly inwards to compensate for the fade.

Iv not tried putting the club horisontaly out yet.
              I intend to though.
Theres lots of tips and ideas here that I am intending to try.
Too many to really experiment with in one day.

Im a total noob right now.
Im working my way upto an 18 round. Hopefuly next Friday. I got to play for free where I work.. :-)
Im gona try and get one of the course owners (a champ in Scotland) to play with me and give me some tips.... (i also intend to do some brown nosing Hehe ).
