  • Open stance Put

    Hi,

I have just returned to golf after not playing since I was 18. I am now 35. I was playing off 12 back then, and have just returned to find out about a lot of different methods. Today I opened up my stance when putting, like a chip shot. Unbelievebly I felt more comfortable than the standard stance and had better accuracy and lenth. Now, my concern is that I discovered this on my own and wonder if I should continue with it. Has anyone heard of this before, or am I going to look like a clown??

    Re: Open stance Put

    Hi there,

    Welcome back.

Putting is a very individual thing and whatever feels comfortable should be fine as long as the ball goes in the hole.

Thats all you can say about putting, regardless that Dave Pelts makes a living out of what is a rather simple thing, look back in history at all the different putting stances to see for yourself.....................How funny would you look today if you putted like Jack Nickalas or Gary Player today, you would probably get your knuckles wrapper by the commitee for messing about on the course........................

My son looks at the hole and sets up to the ball, but NEVER takes another look, I find it amazing that he doesn't need to look again...he holes a fair few, I practice all the time with my eyes shut, look at the hole set up and shut your eyes........you will be suprised how good you can be.

    Hope this helps.

    Ian.

I putt with an open stance - I find it helps taking the putter straight back easier.

Ian has it right in that putting is very individual. I think it is important to keep your eyes over the ball when making your alignment, open or closed stance again is what feel right.
