So I've been swinging TaylorMade R7 XDs since they came out (got them early Xmas of 2005) and loved them. As I felt like my game was progressing, I decided on some new irons. I wanted to trade up to the new R7s so I started swinging using the simulator at the local shop I frequent. Not bad...185 total yards with a 6 iron. So I was just about to tell them I'll take it when I spotted the new Nike CCIs. First swing and each swing thereafter were consistently straight and around the 193 total yards range. It was amazing. I checked out the Callaway X20s because all three sets were the same price. 210 and straight as an arrow was my best from the X20 6 iron. Each shot averaged over 200. Needless to say, I bought them. They gave me a killer deal 5% off and $30 more for my trade. I ended up paying half price.

Obviously, this thread can't be completed without me saying that I recommend them. I do! I averaged 183 total with my XDs so that's improvement by almost 20 yards. Yes sir. I'm happy.

Yes, even though I cant really afford the new stuff I love and still use my Greatest Big Bertha and Warbird..

Ive tried so many woods and drivers but none of them beat the Big Bertha.. with the graffaloy shaft in its the best..and the small head off the warbird 3-5 woods really help me get out of tight areas where i need distance.. Id never give em up....

I was thinkin of gettin a Bertha II, but I heard there are illegal to PGA rules now..

I dunno... an awful lot of money for clubs that probably don't fit...

Facintating. I am a bit of a club junky and the more clubs you try the better idea you will have of what you are looking for. I didin't realize that performance can differ that much among maunfactures. For the drivers, anyway, I thought those clubs with the MOI - are made to the limts of the spec of the governing bodies and the rest was hype.

I used taylorMade and Callaway drivers for years - last year I tried a Cobra driver - I wouldn't give that up for anything. I also have the Cobra Baffler 4 iron/hybrid which is fantastic. I am currently using Callaway Hawkeye irons they are a bit dated now - very forgiving - and like you, I will try quite a few irons before I buy.

          good luck.

            hi john
i think lowpost ment that most clubs that are sold dont match the player using them and if they were to be fitted and have there clubs tweeked to fit they would play even better and when you pay that much having them fitted is a small cost to add.
glad you find them so good and working for you so well. best of luck with your game.

You misunderstood - dollar for dollar, OEM's are time and again the most overpriced, underfit clubs you can buy.

I'll concur that $300 for those irons is a great price.

How long did your fitting last at the shop?

                Re: Callaways

2 hours which included the time for them to make corrections. We ended up determining shaft length was fine and they only needed to add tape to expand the grip so it fit in my hands correctly. My fingers were touching the padding in my hand. Ironically, I think this was the problem with my XDs too. They never bothered to check my grip for those when I was getting fitted.

On another note, sorry for being defensive. I get that way sometimes when I'm psyched about something and feel as if I'm being attacked. I know...constructive criticism.

That's a hell of a length for a 6 iron. How far does yout driver go?

                    Re: Callaways

I can't hit it. Never really understood why.

They did have one of those square Callaway drivers on demo. I managed to get 270 out of it which was fairly straight.

I have issues with my swing. When I get it and have (that feeling) I can swing and go long some days. Some other days, I can't seem to hit anything long. I know the power is there....just wish I was more consistent. Maybe a tune up from my coach is in order.

BTW, Callaway's uniflex shafts are too cool.
