  • Looks over productivity ?

    Hey everybody.
I was just wondering why I cant quit messing with my swing. I played my first two times this year and was bombing it for me. 260 average and had some 280 . On the second time I played I took a video cam to tape me and my bud hitting off scenic hole three at my course. After watching my swing on tape I started picking it apart and started tinkering with stuff. The next time I played I was all screwed up. I went back now to how I was swinging so I thinkI am ok now. There has got to be a name for the disease I have. I am done tinkering. I dont want to see my swing on video again unless im hitting poorly.(or on tv ) Obsessive compulsive people should not play golf.

Someone coined a phrase "paralysis due to over analysis" or something like that. I have also heard the phrase "the more you tinker, the more that goes wrong" which is pretty much the same. GJS

Can we add 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' to the list?

Yes, all those sayings are good.

What about "If you always do what you have always done you will always get what you always got" So, if its good then keep doing it, otherwise do something else.

The definition of "crazy" is continuing to do something knowing the outcome is never good but doing it anyway because you think this time there will be a different result.
Younger players seem infatuated with mechanics to the detriment of their swing or progress instead of just practicing basic fundamentals until they are ingrained into every single swing. Confidence on the course doesn't come from mechanics, but rather from sound fundamentals which can be repeated under relaxed and stressful conditions without fail.
It is only when one has "mastered" the fundamentals that mechanics can be incorporated into one's swing; otherwise, we are putting the cart before the horse.

Yes, I agree. Although the fundamentals are mechanical

TID, we've had a wonderful discussion about your points - look for a thread started by BrianW - I think the title is 'twatting or mechanics'?

I think the general consensus was that while learing, you had to be somewhat mechanical, but when playing, you need to play by trust and feel.

I think maybe Im just greedy. Im 6 foot 185 pounds and in great shape and feel like I should be able to bomb it like the pros . I cant.
Look at Charles howell the 3rd. He is scrawny but still freakin blows it by me 100 plus yards. Its not an ego thing as much as a...... what do they have that I dont. I am just going to maintain the swing I have as of now and work on my neglected short game. (maybe I am a little crazy though)

For me, the definition of "crazy" as it applies to golf that I love the most is:

"Doing the exact same thing over and over and expecting a different result..."

That said, I think I have resigned myself to the fact that I do not do "everything" preparatory to hitting the ball the same way all 80 or 90 odd times a round I hit the agate...

I simply cannot guarantee that I will grip the club the exact same way 3 full swings in a row. Or align myself correctly to my intended target line correctly once, let alone 80 or 90 times. I don't know "exactly" how far I hit each club. I have a rough idea my 7 or 8 iron is my 150 club, but it changes day to day depending on any number of things.

Lack of pratice time, lack of a want to pay attention to detail, general apathy all around, who knows...

What I do know is is that I play my best golf when I am relaxed and happy and thinking about anything but the game I am playing...

Sounds ridiculous I know, but, there it is......

Spoken like a truly fatalistic mid handicapper destined to remain so...

                        OR:

Swing the same speed with a longer club.

                        OR:

                        Make better contact

                        OR:

                        Produce less spin

                        OR:

                        Get more carry

                            I didn't say hit straighter!

@Brian - my assumption was 'all other things being equal' - in other words, the club doesn't change and the contact doesn't improve. But all your suggestions work, too! (Please note that too little spin will decrease distance).
