  • Three Truths in Golf

I came across the following little gem of information and thought I would share it with you. (And it was not from Lowpost )
    • Truth #1 If your golf clubs are fitted properly and if your golf swing is sound, then Great Golf is 100% mental.
    • Truth #2 If your golf clubs are fitted properly and if your golf swing needs help, then Great Golf is 65% swing and 35% mental.
    • Truth #3 If your concept of a golf swing is sound and your clubs are not fitted properly, then golf becomes frustrating and less enjoyable. The mental aspect of golf is up and down and developing a sound swing is impossible.
So…Great Golf is not possible if you do not possess:
    1. Properly fitted clubs.
    2. A good golf swing.
    3. A good mental attitude.

My pro says that I could get lie angle bent 1/2 to 1* upright, but he doesn't think it would make that much of a difference. I checked my "physical" and swing stats on several of those online fitting systems. All say standard length, but 1* upright.

Should I get my lie angles checked? Does 1/2 to 1* make a huge difference?

First, what is your normal/natural ball flight now?
Second, what do you want it to be?
Third, answer 1 & 2, and I can give you my opinion

For the short irons this makes a huge difference because short irons face angle mostly point up (vertically), and lie angles adjust this vertical alignments. Tape a stick or a straw's tip to a flat style magnet from your fridge. Then put that magnet on the face of your SW. Adjust the lie angle up and down just a few degrees and watch the straw point quite a bit left and right. Then take that magnet and put it on the face of your driver. Do the same lie angle play up and down and you will notice almost no left or right movement.

This is why you need a set of clubs that have matched lie angles. If your 9i is 2 degrees upright and your 8i is 1 degree up, and your PW is 1 degree flat...good luck trying to figure where to aim during a round.

This is also why no one ever really worries about the lie angle of woods...one size fits all there.

It strikes me that many people claim golf is 80% mental but simple analysis tells you this just isn't so.

          Golf is:

80% set up (including pre-shot routine)
          60% swing mechanics
          50% course management
          20% good fortune

          It's the other 80% that's mental.

            That's 210% plus another 80% of your mental=290%
Man, I wish I could the bank to figure that way when they give me interest.

              hi
i am 5"8 but have short legs but a long body, my first clubs were standared fit (Ping black spot) i got a set of orange spot 2* flat Ping zings and went to the Ping pro to get then bent to black spot but i found i was playing lot better with the orange spot clubs than the black, when i chatted to the pro he said it was because i had shortish legs for my body hight and thats why the 2* flat clubs worked better with me, i had the clubs checked for spec and only the 7 iron was out 2* so he sorted that, i then did a test for lie and a monitor check and the orange clubs gave me a better flight of the ball, i had the black spot clubs checked and they still showed on the lie gage that they were ok as i changed my stance to make them lie flat.
i think there could be a lot of player like me, change there stance to suit the club and not the other way around and like brain said that makes the game so much harder.

1st - Draw ball flight on all clubs, including my woods. My miss is left and I do tend to hit pulls.

2nd - I like my draw, but I do tend to miss left.

To go off of Greg's post a bit, my short irons do always tend to point LEFT of the target. If I had my clubs adjusted to 1* upright I THINK that would make the face point more to the right, just like Greg said with the magnet/straw get-up.

Curious to hear thoughts, maybe this will help me get even better!

More upright = more to the pull side. Your pulls would get worse, not better, especially with the short irons.

Like TID said, your ballflight is what ultimately dictates lie angle. If they're going straight at target (drawing/fading is a different matter), leave them alone. If you're consistently starting the ball one side or the other, bend to correct.

I found a golfsmith near my house who will check my lie angles for free, and will adjust each club, if necessary, for $3 a club. I also need new grips on my wedges too

                        Re: Three Truths in Golf

I have been thinking about getting fitted clubs and I am wondering what constitutes, objectively, a good golf club? I currently have a miss mash of Callaway, Cobra, Taylormade, Ping, and Wilson. My first set of clubs were a set valued at $400.00 (Topflights) and the Callaway (Hawkeyes) are clearly superior. My brother-in-law had a set fitted for him for under $400.00 – how would you know if you got good components or expensive cheap stuff….

                        Thanks,

                        James

                          Hi Robin,

Bit confused about the percentages here?

The clip did say that if your clubs are fitted and your swing is sound then good golf is 100% mental. That's just about right for me, if you have good tools and skills then it's mainly what goes on in your head that affects the way you play and course management is mental.

I agree that good fortune is also a factor, as the saying goes "Better lucky than skillful"

Oh dear, that's the last time I try to be funny on a serious golf site.

For what its worth I'd agree that once you get the fundamentals down to the best of your ability then the most importance distance in golf is the space between your ears.
