  • The concept of "Playing Dead"......

Had an interesting chat with the Captain of my Club's Pennant team last night. Some of you might remember that our team has qualified for our grade final coming Sunday and should we win, we will be promoted for next season.

The interesting part of the conversation centred over my playing handicap for the final.

Right now my exact handicap is 15.5, playing h/cap of 16. So, with our clubs Medal round on Saturday, my Captain suggested that I try to "preserve my 16"........

In effect, he is asking me to not try and win the medal, not try to improve my handicap...

Have already decided that now I am going to try and shoot a sub 80 and take another 2 or so off, just wanted to put the thought out there and see what the masses might think...

    Cheers

Sid is right. And the reason is this game is ultimately going to be played straight up without hdcps. But in these comps where the hdcp is considered, it is for the purpose of leveling players. Having to give strokes to an opponent says that you are the better player. Standing there on the first tee, shaking hands, saying to him, "You sure you only want 2 shots? Will you need any more today?" and saying yourself, "that's right, I'll give you 4 and still win" will feed confidence in the round. Take control right away. Never cheat yourself out of an opportunity to say that.

Unsure why... But... Have an inate sense of something good this weekend...

Whether it be a nett 50 something in the medal on Saturday or a 6 and 5 win on Sunday I'm not sure...

Bottom line, two things will not change about my golf game, in any round I play, for whatever reason...

My enjoyment for playing and my being the best I can be.

I love this game because it challenges me.

        And

It affords me the opportunity to do so in the company of people whose company I enjoy...

You really do have to love this game....

        Cheers

Totally endorse what everyone else has said. There's no point having a handicap system that tries to make things fair, and abusing it to make things unfair. Captain be damned - he's in the same territory as asking a boxer to throw a fight. Good luck in both rounds, buddy

I'd love to know how the Captain would react if the opposition cheated in the same way.

There's only one way to handle this.

              Play your very best TWICE!

Oh - and AFTER you have been promoted, be sure to tell your captain that you think his attitude is unsporting and ungentlemanlike to the point of being incompatible with the game of golf (of course in the nicest possible way).

go out and rip the course up scraggs and bo**ocks to the captain!

better to live one day as a lion than every day as a lamb!

I remember loosing 2 shots last year just before the captains prize.
I was kinda miffed but a couple of people pointed out to me that you dont get to choose when you play well in golf.
When it comes to you, you grab it and try not to let go.
