  • beginner needs help with straight shots

I am still working on getting everything in line, however, I feel that my backswing and stance is progressing well. Distance isn't really a problem either, however, I am having thje hardest time keeping the ball straight. I was at the Range last night and out of 105 balls, maybe 25 went straight, the rest went way off to the right. I adjusted my stance and cocked my body a little, that helped, but I still feel that I doing something wrong. Any help??
    Thanks

    Hi Danruf,

    Awesome car!!!

I need some more details about your swing. Are the shots to the right slices, fades or straight pushes.

      What kinda club?

With my woods, I am still slicing and sending the ball off to the right. (getting better though)
I found that I had the face aligned to the ball wrong. I had it addressing straight, so I angled it inwards and the ball didnt go right quite as far.

Irons are fine. Again, Once I worked out that (again) the club was lined up wrong, I get some nice straight shots.

I believe that the shots are slices, I adjusted the face of the driver, as fraggle said, and that helps a bit.
I have noticed a couple of things about my swing that I am working on. I have to stay straight, I noticed that as I pull back, instead of simply twisting my shoulders, I am bending a bit and dipping my left shoulder, causing me to bounce the head off the ground (obviously, not good). Secondly, and I am not sure how to correct this, my wrists are not staying straight, and I believe that I am turning them or something resuilting in me not hitted the ball where I aimed the head at, as well as swinging crooked. I seem to be pulling the club in at the end.

thanks for your help, I appreciate it greatly.

Mainly with a 3 wood, sorry.

The car is a Ford (I believe), completly rebuilt. A local rehab center hosts a classic car show every year at the end of September. Thanks

Yea, for a long time I was cocking my left knee during the backswing.... That would throw my ballance off a little... and Id move my head to counter and before you know it. "Slice"!!

One thing I have been doing is drilling myself.
As I line up, I stop and think about my stance.
I mumble to myslef things like...
            "Back straight"
            "kneese slightly bent"
"hold the club like your holding your dick, nice and loose"
during the back swing I still repeat over and over "hips steady, head still, swing the shoulders"

I have been experimenting with "Kissing my shoulder" at the top of the bakcswing..... ongoing experiment....

              Fraggle,

Be careful this is a G rated site. There are quite a few young kids. Please keep it clean.

To help with you driver slicing problem. After you setup, your focus should be on the back of the driver not the golfball. This is probably true to about the 5i. With the driver it will pull the shoulders to the left and open the clubface. Even if you close the clubface you are just putting a bandaid on a potential swing fault. Try not to get into bad habits and you will have less to correct later.

I wouldn't even consider adjusting the club face because that will get you into bad habits and will probably make your game worse.

Most beginners turn their shoulders too soon in the throughswing and that's what I think you're doing. This usually results in an "out to in" swing path which will be why you're slicing the ball.

When you next practice, try leaving your shoulders where they should be at the top of the backswing whilst turning your legs and hips towards the target. You should be able to feel the club and your right shoulder drop more inside (lower.) Try the practice swing really slow without a ball. Better still get somebody to hold the club at the top of the backswing whilst you try swinging (pulling) the club through in this way.

                Keep up the good work.

                Paul
