  • what would you do?

    hi guys
the 2nd hole at my club is par4 399 yds long slight dogleg left
from a raised tee you have to drive through 2 tall trees with a slight draw or else you are in the fairway bunker
from the fairway you cant see the green as the fairway drops slightly downhill,
the problem is that the green is surrounded by deep bunkers and the mouth into the green is very narrow
do i hit an easy 8 iron into the green or should i hit a short wedge up nearer to the green and then ive got bump n run/chip shot
    whats the best option?
    what would you do?

    Re: what would you do?

Depending on how far into the green it is from the fairway bunker...

Ideally I'd take a club that would leave me short of the bunker (assuming the same club gets me past the trees).

From there, if I was in my 'go zone' (inside 150) I'd pull the appropriate club and play away from danger. If the green is truly surrounded by bunkers, then I'd play short and try to get up and down. If there's a bunkerless area, I'd play with a tendency to miss that (ie if the backside isn't bunkered, I'd play to go long).

(Mental Note to Self: 399 yards = 365 metres approx)

Slats, you don't say how far from the tee and what side of the f/way the pot is, I'd take driver as it seems the hole sets up to suit my usual draw and smash it as far round the corner as I could, then, depending on how well the ball finished, presumably somewheres between 80m - 110m from the front, I'd take wedge-9I and go at the heart of the green.

That'd be the plan at least...

The reality is I'd smash driver into one of the two tallish trees you mention, then poke/punch 1iron up and around the corner, go at the green, miss, find a pot, take 2 to get out, only to fly the green on the 2nd attempt and into another of those pots, 2 more to get out, nowhere close and 3 putt for a however many that is...........

      Cheers

Do you have a picture of it (link)? Or the google earth coordinates?

If there is no trouble at the back of the green I'd go for the green. Otherwise I would lay up.

That's the theory - in reality I'd probably play it like scragger63

            thanks for the replies
the fairway bunker is on the right about 250yds
the fairway runs downhill left to right
you cant see the flag from the fairway the green runs downhill away from you and there is long rough and trees at the back of the green!

next time out ill try the laying up option, although im quiteproficient at getting out of the sand they are not the easiest of bunkers to escape from!

Where's your sense of adventure Slats?

              What's the fairway bunker like?

After all its only, what 150yd down hill to the centre of the green?

Just smack the driver out there and stick your 8I from the fairway pot next to the pin.

              Good LUck

(Mental Note To Self: 250 yards = 230 meters approx)

From memory Slats, your 3 wood gets you safely 230 - 240 yards yes...?

Go straight at the pot and from just short of it easy 7 iron in...

                  Laughing...

playing solo saturday will hit 2 balls, one with driver and one with 3 wood and then go for the pin with one and lay up the other.
whichever method brings the lowest score thats gonna be my strategy for the time being!

I guess my strategy would also partly be dictated by what SI it is? I probably have two shots on this hole, and so I imagine I'd be treating it as a par 6 How far away are the two tall trees and how big is the gap between them?

                        hi dog
                        it is SI 8 par4
the trees are not a problem. the problem is you cant see the green until you are upon it and there is little room for error with your approach shot.
the more i think a bout it you are right i can treat it as a par 5 = 1 drive,1 lay up pitch and 1 chip and i should be in good shape!

                              Re: what would you do?

Given that the bunker is 250, I would hit 3 or 5 wood off the tee (depending on how much room there is between the trees and the bunkers, and how much rough there is between the fairway and bunkers).

Since the green slopes away, the the greenside bunkers protect the front, and it's downhill, I'd bump something down to in front of the green, then play to get up and down.
