  • I Thought Hybrids Were Easy?

Hi guys I have been playing a little over a year and my last fifteen rounds have averaged about 91. For the life of me the only clubs I can hit consistently are my driver and irons. I know high handicappers are told not to use long irons but I carry my 31 off the tee around 200. I cannot hit hybrids or woods consistently off the tee or fairway for some reason. It might be a confidence issue. I have Callaway Big Bertha irons which are also very forgiving which may be why I can hit the 3 and 4 irons in the set. I am not sure of driver carry but I had my swing speed measured recently with a driver at around 96 mph. I am afraid I will have too big of a gap between my driver and 3i so can any of you suggest a 17 or 18 degree hybrid that is shaped like a traditional iron? Can anyone also suggest a driver that is forgiving, I broke mine Sunday

I have had the same confidence problems with the hybrids and fairway woods. I am now hitting my hybrid pretty darn good. It took a long time to trust it enough to use in a round. My main thought when hitting this club is to keep my head behind the ball through the swing. When I do this and take a normal swing the ball goes as intended.

I also hit this club alot choked way down to build confidence and contact. Just use your reg swing and hit it like a iron.....good luck.

Yup, the secret is to hit the hybrid just like an iron. Just place the ball in the middle of your stance as you would for an iron and swing away. If you place the ball too forward, you will hit the ball thin and won't get the distance and accuracy you are looking for. Just practice that until you get comfortable and then you can take it to the course. You'll see, that club will sometimes do miracles.

The beauty of a hybrid is you can use it like a wood and an iron (Hybrid, it suggests something)

In the rough use it like an iron, hit down on the ball, the head will cut through the grass and get the ball up.

On the fairway use it like a wood, bounce the sole off the grass and catch the ball at the bottom of the arc.

So! ball centre in the rough and hit down, ball slightly forward on the fairway and bounce the sole into the ball.

Stick with it! I had trouble with my hybrids, and now they are my best clubs. I have a preference for the Cobra Baffler- an amazing club. I suggest that you swing the club like an iron – it worked for me.

          Good luck,

          James

My biggest problem with them is overswinging (trying to kill it). It is usually when I need extra yardage and have to push it, like carrying over a pond or something. Gotta put that EASY swing on it....

Same here. When I reach for the hybrid, it's a situation where I need distance from the fairway, and that fact alone has me primed for overswinging, or just rushing the swing. The last time I got a good shot with one, I remember saying to myself during the setup, "Just hit it as if this were an easy 8 iron shot." I did that and sent it 200 yards. I should probably think about all my long and mid iron shots the same way.

I just got the Nike Slingshot Tour hybrid with a 3 iron loft and there are times when i hit it really good and it feels great but I'm still not used to it. I tend to try and kill it i guess i just need to swing it easy and pretend its a 6 iron or something and just hit it because I know it will send the ball 200+
