Amateur status

When a coach commences employment, he has to give up 'amateur status' in order to receive money for lessons, right?

What exactly is s/he giving up? The ability to compete in club tourneys? Anything else?

They also have to play off scratch which I feel is unfair! I teach about 40 students a week and very seldom get a chance to play golf myself, when I do play I genrally shoot about 79!
