I usually find the opposite, most of the 26 HCPers I play with play by the rules and taking penalties and putting everything out.

Then there are these that turn up and say, "oh I'm about a 13 HCP" and then proceed to top it into the woods, take a free drop, shank it, skull a chip and then miss a 5 footer and then lazily knock their 2 footer in the direction of the hole miss and count it as a putt made. After the horror show they usually claim to have shot an 84.

*Disclaimer* Obviously there are honest 13 HCPers who's game is a joy to watch and dishonest 26 HCPers who probably haven't broken 140 in their life.

Fascinating post. I think you nailed it on the head – it is arrogance. The friend that I play less and less with, won’t look at Golf DVDs or take lessons – but he actively cheats. And for those of us who take lessons and get better he minimizes it - i.e., you don’t hit it further your hitting it improperly that’s why it goes to so far – yet the ball flight is excellent, and the new distance is a consequence of lessons – I respond my golf pro has a different view of my new distance. Other times when he gets upset and throws things, I think you are not good enough to be that upset. I think the arrogance cuts both ways - he has high expectations and isn’t consumed with self-doubt which helps his game. On the downside, unless you acknowledge your short coming you are not in a position to correct them and 20 years hence you are still standing too far from the ball, coming over the top – and in some cases still cheating. Ultimately, I play less and less with cheaters – the cheating is symptomatic of even bigger problems.

I think the diference is between those who cheat on the course to act like they are a better golfer vs. those that cheat in regards to their handicaps or for financial gain.

There are several people at my club who want to act like a better golfer then they are and will bend the rules to have lower scores. The 13 who are actually 18, then the others who play to a 13 but want to claim a 20+ for betting and tournement purposes. I would say the later is the most common. Most of those will also cheat on the course as well when it suits them but mainly it involves a financial incentive to do so.

I have only encountered the former type. Those who's ego is too enormous to lose (badly) to someone they consider inferior and will fudge the numbers rarely admitting to more than a triple on holes they blatantly scored 9 or 10 on. I laugh to myself as I know they know deep down what they are doing and they'd have to be stupid to think that I don't know.

Another classic trait of this kind of cheater is a load of ready made excuses.

"my back has been sore lately"

"well I don't have time to practice like you do"

after a good score by you: "well this is an easy hole"

"my back has been sore lately" I've got back pain meds in my bag

"well I don't have time to practice like you do" I don't have time to practice like I do, either (Head scratching usually ensues)

after a good score by you: "well this is an easy hole" I certainly made it look that way, yep

            I love smart-ass answers.

Yeah that's the only way to do it. I went birdie birdie playing some kid for just 5 dollars and he was like well those are prolly the two easiest holes to birdie on the course though.

I said "well yeah i guess when your good, whatd you take? Bogey, Double?

The funniest thing I like to do is when someone is real cocky and hates to lose and stuff like that, is when they hit a bad shot or they just miss the green or something i walk up to them and say "now did you inhale, or exhale when you took that swing" They usually just stand there for a little and i just look at him and then walk away. His day is done after that, he'll get so upset that he'll be thinking about his breathing and not hitting the golf ball.

Sometimes thinking about your breathing is much better than hitting the golf ball...

lol well not when you're having a bad day.

like if you focus on if you are inhaling or exhaling during your swing and not about the shot how are you gonna hit the shot you wanna hit.

you cant because you dont know what shot you wanna hit u just wanna inhale during the swing or hold your breath or whatever lol

Re: What to do with cheaters?

i no longer play with a work colleague as he was the worst cheat ever
he would always improve his lie either by doing some extensive gardening while in the woods or blatantly pick up his ball and place it on the edge of the fairway.when i was in a bad lie he would encourage me to move the ball which i didnt claiming one day i might have that lie in a comp!
on some holes he would hit 2 balls so i wasnt sure which one he was scoring with.
i reckoned he would shave off between 6 and 10 shots a round and then on monday morning at work he is bragging how he "beat" me with his "85"
i got him back 3 fold first i enlightened my work colleagues as to how he achieves his great scores.
i told our works society organiser to give him a 15 handicap
                    based on "his" scores
i joined a private club where guests at weekends are only allowed on after 12 noon and he knows im an early morning player

Re: What to do with cheaters?

I played a match on Wednesday Night. It was a semi final of a cup competition. I played this 8 handicapper, so I gave him 2 shots.

I've never seen such a bad loser. We were all square after 13. On 14 he was 3 feet away so I made him putt it. He holed it and then said,

"Is that okay for you ?"

I never replied. On 14 he made me hole out from 2 inches and 15 it was 6 inches. I won 16 as well so it was a 3 and 2 win. I shook his hand and said "Thanks for the game"

                      He said, "I didn't deserve that !"

He looked close to tears, the baby !

Man, I'd love to play match play. I'd give almost EVERYTHING on the front 9, just to keep them from feeling their putter.

The guy i play with will make me putt tap ins when hes got a long putt to win or tie a hole. It's not because he thinks everything should go in the hole he is just a sore loser. I give anything that I believe is an easy tap in because I don't see the point in wasting the time and i know i will beat him anyway so i dont need him to putt them out lol, thats my mindset.

A man after my own heart. Give all those tricky 2 footers; knock the ball away with a cheery "that's close enough for me" until the one that matters and with luck watch your opponent miss

It'd be more fun if they blew their first lag - say, gave themselves 6 feet. If I could match them for a half, then I'd give it to them. The more time they spend without their putter in their hands or getting a feel for reads and pace, the better, IMO.

Every now and then I buddy and I will play 'battle golf'. If you lose a hole, your opponent can dictate which club you no longer get to use. You can play two ways where when you win you can either get a club back, or where there are no 'returns', and you simply win and select a club that your opponent cannot use. The first thing I take away is the putter. Then the sand wedge. Then usually the club around where he's been laying up to (he's not particularily a threat with the driver).

I play against the course and myself because if you let the cheaters and the burglars who protect their handicaps for the more important comps you would give the game away. The only annoying thing about these people are they make the CCR less than what it should be so people who play honestly do not get the reward of watching their handicap drop as much as it should. Personally i do not see the value in cheating (a bad reputation all for the sake of winning a golf ball or five bucks off your mates) i think people who are caught cheating on more than one occassion should be suspended from all comp rounds for a period of time.
