I played at my brother’s club yesterday for only the second time and for the first time in almost exactly a year. Last year I was pleased with 101, this year I was disappointed with a 93.
Started the round bogey, bogey, bogey, par, bogey, bogey; cool stuff for me except that I only hit one tee shot even vaguely OK; the scores were from scrambling well. Finished the front nine 8, 3, 7 as my driver completely deserted me.
Still a 45 though and just 5 over for the seven non blow up holes; amazingly 6 single putts in a 12 putt front nine.
Left the driver in the bag for the back nine starting with a cracking rescue wood to set up a really nice “regulation” par – sadly it was the last tee shot I hit as I came home in 48 with 16 putts for a 28 putt round and played to 24 (on my v. easy home course I play to 20-22).
Two years ago (when I joined GTO) I couldn’t take any range game to the course 100+, 110+ … were the norm.
One year ago thanks to advice from here I could pretty much rely on a mid iron from the fairway well enough to dink my way around to somewhere near a 100.
Today I’ve added a short game of sorts and on reasonable greens can putt well; on my home course I can even score in the eighties.
So why I am still disappointed?
Simply because under pressure (and believe me, in my family sibling rivalry matches the pressure of the Captains Cup) I can’t take the range big stick to the course.
One day.
