  • 1st birdie of the year!!!

I have only had 6 birdies in my life (playing since 2003). I am a 22.7 HCP and this year especially I have been looking at a lot of birdie putts and none of them have dropped, although I have left 4-5 on the lip of the cup.

I managed 1 birdie in 2003, 1 in 2004, 1 in 2005, and 2 last year. I was beginning to think that I wouldn't get one this year until....

...I step up to the 8th tee at the Evergreen golf course (Westport, ON). A 160 yard par 3 over a massive water hazard. I pulled a 6i but when I saw the multi tiered green with the pin at the back, I decided to take an extra club, my 24 degree hybrid. I hit it really sweetly and the ball landed and stopped almost on the spot, about 6-7 feet from the pin. I had a quick look at it and decided to play it about 1 ball width to the left and stroked it beautifully, right into the heart of the cup.

    YIPPEE!!!

    Nice work!

I got my first of the year yesterday. 300 yard par 4. Bomb driver up there, 60° wedge to 3 feet. Inside left for 3.

      Feels great doesn't it. Congrats.

I am convinced I don't get my fair share though. I have friends who play very infrequently and have never broken 120 that get 3 or 4 a season.

Well, when I only average 2 greens/round (and I'm rarely close), I take the chances I can get. Granted, I also have an eagle or two to my name (one an 'on in two' 1 putt on a par 5 (480 yards) and holing out from 150.)

I find the toughest part about making bird is trying to keep the putt as non-chalant as possible.

          Good job. Birdies feel good.

Still looking for my first eagle ... I think it was hanging around LP's course ... I hope he didn't use mine.

I had a peagle once, too. At my course, there's a 306 yard par 4, downhill then up. 220 to the creek at the bottom of the hill.

I absolutely crush/flush a 4 iron off the tee... ball goes left of the fairway.

I get down there, and figure that either a squirrel ate my ball, or it bounced into the creek.

Take my drop, hit my ball (I'm about 100 out, and uphill, through birches). My ball tickles some leaves, but gets through.

I get up to the green and start searching for my ball. Search long. Search short. Search left. Search right. Finally, I say to the guy I'm playing with 'forget it. I can't even guess where my ball would have ended up, and I'm not going back to drop. You can just finish up.' He holes his putt, but it sounds a little off dropping in the cup. He asks what I was playing, I said 'some Dunlop straight arrow or something like that'. And he pulls it from the cup. Had I not had the kick into the crick, it would have been my first eagle!

Re: 1st birdie of the year!!!

I got my first and my second eagle in the same round two weeks ago. I had been coming very very close on eagle putts in the last week but they just wouldnt fall. I was playing a two man scramble with my friend against two of the members I am buddies with and we were down 1 going into the 16th (we played the back first because league guys were on the front) and I blasted a drive barely into the right rough after my partner hit his OB. Then I hit a 3 wood from the rough to about 25 feet on the green in two. The putt was a crazy one it ended up breaking about 10 feet and when it went in the hole it was going straight to the left, so it was a crazy breaker but somehow i made it. We finished the back and we were down going into the last 4 on the front. We got to hole 2 which is another par 5 but its very short. There is a creek in the middle of the fairway and if you get over that its no more than a 7 iron into the green. I hit a 9 to about 12 feet and had a downhill putt. I aimed it about a ball outside to the left and just tapped it and let it roll down the hill. It fell in for my 2nd of the day. 2 eagles in a two man scramble using my own shots the entire hole.
