  • practice:tee to green or green to tee?

in an effort to get my h/c going down i thought i would set aside some time to practice.as i spend more time around the green , or more shots , i decided to start from the green and work back to the tee.
had a putting lesson, found a good tip on gto 'putt knocked kneed ', changed my grip , and spent hours on the putting green.this has paid off , and i saved 3-5 shots.
next i had a pitching lesson for 30-70 yards out.open stance, week grip.swing from 9'oclock to 3 'oclock and keep your right elbow attatched to your side.hands 1/2 way down grip ,kept hitting balls then varied hand posistion to gain more distance, same tempo every shot.used sw, pw,9iron.been doing this for 4months getting the ball much nearer the pin, no duff shots no missing the green, saved a few more strokes off the card.
worked on the 8,7,6 irons, trying to be more consistent and accurate, this is starting to pay off.gone from high 90's to low 90's.
    currently working on 5iron , 3&5woods.
if i hit my 8-125yds,7-135yds,6-145yds,5-155yds.how far should i be hitting my woods?at present 5w-165yds,3w 175yds at the range.
as these clubs need a more upright stance i think i might be losing ny spine angle as i seem to finish very upright , any tips and comments on distances would be appreciated.
in going from green to tee i have deff lost a consistent hit from the tee.

I would agree with pure handicap purposes to go from green to tee, being good around the green saves the most strokes. Though, you need to make sure the other areas of your game are not regressing. You should continue to work on the putting and chipping while incorporating the work on the irons.

to me a 5w should play or be about as long as a 2i, given your distance of your irons and adding 10 yds a club a 5 wood should be about 175 and your 3 wood should be around 200.

I agree with ogallalabob and with what you're doing. If you waste shots from 150 &in, focus on that but don't focus only on that though. It's easy to focus and practice on those aspects and then you start to lose shots from the tee or longer fairway shots.

Within each practice session of say an hour, always allow 15 minutes or so for the longer irons, fairway woods and tee shots.

Your distances are a little short but whether you hit a 7-iron into a green or a PW - accuracy is more important than distance. DOn't be too concerned about the distance for now.

i did think i was a little short with the longer clubs. i will try to work more with these whilst continuing my short game practice.i still think the more upright stance is costing me distance somehow, but maybe its a confidence thing, time will tell, thanks for your input

          hi bruin
how is your game from sand, that is another area where a short lesson can help you a great deal and save you a good few shots in a round if you have deep links type bunkers like me, also the lesson in the sand can also be used when in the rough aroung the green too.
i think the way your going about improving your golf will pay off in time.
          best of luck
