  • Sky Caddie

Well I finally joined the 21st century, went out and got me a Sky Caddie SG4. Haven't played with it yet, but just goofin with the demo, this thing is going to be great, can't believe I waited so long to get one. Only thing is the first time I use this is going to be in our Base Championship this weekend, three day torny. My concern is how do keep from getting myself or opponent or both, from getting DQ'ed if we are riding in the same cart. They usually pair us up together two carts to a foursome, usually it is not a problem because you don't say anything about distance or club used during the round, but with this thing in full view, wouldn't it be a rules violation if he doesn't have one and looks at mine when we stop, or at the tee. I will probably bring it up, before we start, just wondering what you folks that have one and have played a torny with it, had to say, what you did about it.

Because the Sky Caddie is basically filling a caddie role.

    Specifically rule:
    8-1 Advice

During a stipulated round, a player must not:
    (a) give advice to anyone in the competition playing on the course other than his partner, or(b) ask for advice from anyone other than his partner or either of their caddies.

GPS devices are permitted in tournament play only if the committee makes a specific exeception allowing them.

I agree with your argument that it's essentially fulfilling a caddie, but the R 7 A do not share our opinion

    Rule 14.3:

Except as provided in the Rules, during a stipulated round the player must not use any artificial device or unusual equipment:
    a. That might assist him in making a stroke or in his play; or
    b. For the purpose of gauging or measuring distance or conditions that might affect his play; or
    c. That might assist him in gripping the club, except that:
    (i) plain gloves may be worn;
(ii) resin, powder and drying or moisturising agents may be used; and
(iii) a towel or handkerchief may be wrapped around the grip.
PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 14-3:
    Disqualification.

Though I wasn't sure your question wasn't so much 'is it legal?' as 'how do I not get caught?'?

      hi
don't see the problem really as most shots you will be standing by your ball alone when reading the distance to the green and your partners will not be right next to you. you will only be taking readings for your ball and not theres. on the tee you don't have to hold it our for them all to see. when others are teeing off thats when i put in the data for the hole before so don't hold up play. i have never found it any problem.

No not trying to cheat, they are legal for USGA and R&A, they make a point out of saying that, even says so when you power it up, on the openning screen. What I was saying is I have a clamp mount that clamps it to the cart, where it is very easily viewed. I guess I need to forego the clamp and use the belt click, to keep the info private.

          Re: Sky Caddie

They're not legal per se - only via a local committee exception, as I stated. The R&A and USGA have allowed local committees the choice of allowing them, but in the absence of an explicit statement, they are against the rules.

I think it's daft, along with having to remove the flagstick when putting, but there it is...

First off, as Bulldog says, GPS or Laser devices are only legal on the say so of the commitee by a local rule; that said assuming they Ok for the competition then imo you don't have a problem if someone else looks; as below "information obtained by observation is not advice" so rule 8.1 does not apply.

8-1/10 Looking into Another Player’s Bag to Determine Club Used
            http://www.usga.org/playing/rules/bo...ision-line.gif

            Q. A looks into B’s bag to determine which club B used for his last stroke. Is this the equivalent of asking for advice?

            A. No. Information obtained by observation is not advice. But see also Decision 8-1/11.
