    The best golf shot I've ever played...

    This is me.

    My ball had rolled into a water hazard, and was just submerged. Looking at the green, I saw I had to carry approx 20 yards of water out of this hazard, approx 30 yards of fairway, and another ditch before the green. I checked whether there was water in the second hazard with my brother and mother, and they confirmed there was.

    Inexplicably, I decided to play it.

    Gulp.

    Big smooth swing = splash! water everywhere - in my face, all over me - I really struggled but suceeded in keeping my head down. You can see in the pic how much weight I have on my back foot, and if you look at the footprint in the mud next to me, you can see why - I was sinking quickly.

    Truth told, the contact wasn't exactly as I visualised it - it flew lower, carrying the 2nd ditch, pitched into the bank on the far side, flew up, landed gently, and rolled out - 10 feet from the pin.

    I honestly think it's one of the greatest golf shots I've ever played.

    I turn round, waiting for the applause, and am mystified to see my my bro and mother looking aghast.

    "What?"

    My brother points left at 90 degrees.

    "The green's over there..."

    Damnit. I didn't even bother to look. Not having played the course before, I just saw that green ad played to it.

    "Well, why didn't you stop me?"

    "We thought you were just playing over the first hazard. There wasn't a direct shot from where you were, but there would have been from the other side of the pond."

    I went into Mutley mode for a while. It's still the best shot I've ever played, though

    dont you just love it when you play a great shot into the wrong green!

      did it once at st Andrews, 10 feet from the pin but was the wrong pin was one of there shared greens, could not tell the difference in flag color from 185 yards away as it was wet and a bit misty with sea mist rolling in off the sea and had hit a super 4 iron to 10 feet but when i got to the green i found i had at least a 35 yard putt to the right flag and no matter how hard i hit the ball i could not reach 3/4 of the way there took a 6 and i though i was going to putt for a 3. really guts you when that happened. i feel for you bulldog.

        Some days are just like that, it was the thought that counts, you thought it was the right green, so it counts in my mind. Now, what would have really been funny, was if the guy really playing that hole, would have hit about the same time, lost site of his ball, seen yours bounce onto the green and thinking it was his...lmao..lol...priceless.

        I was playing one day, my buddy hit his ball just over the green, I was 15 feet for birdie, now is when the fun starts, he thought, because of the angle, raised green, that my ball was his, and vise verse. When we got to the green, the marshall was there (he watched the approach), I knew him so stopped to chat, unfortunately near his ball, golfing was slow, so we had time.

        Buddy is all keyed up about this birdie putt he thinks he has, gets impatient, runs up and putts the ball, bam..right in the heart, starts jumping up down, cause he is 20 hdcap, rarely gets birdie, marshall starts laughing, says to me, you know he just putted your ball in, now I am laughing. He goes to his ball all dejected, flobs the chip and three putts for a double. I made, so we got two birdies and a double on that hole.

          I holed out an eagle two from 170 yards that turned out to be the wrong green. I couldn't see the correct green, so I shot at the one I could see. At the time I did not know what the penalty might be, so I took an unplayable lie, move the ball to the fringe, so as not to damage the green. and hit the correct green some 50 yards away, that my foursome was standing on....laughing at me. I still don't know what the ruling would be on that type of error since I never bothered to check. I just know I lost that hole. GJS

            LOL...when I was in the Navy years ago, I played over in Scotland, never played a links course. Played by myself, I had never played a course that used the same green for two different holes..lol...the green on #8 was HUGE, knocked my ball right next to the pin, putted out, then when I went to put the pin back, noticed it said #15, what, looked some 200 feet away on the other side of the green, yep there was another pin, said #8 on it.

              That really made me smile. Priceless!

              It reminded me of a time when I wore a younger mans clothes and was playing Rugby. I emerged from a loose maul, semi concussed with the ball under my arm, sprinted towards the touch line while palming off two attempted tackles and side stepping another, dived for the line and touched down a fantastic try. When my head stopped spinning I realised my team mates were standing shaking their heads as I had touched down over my own line
