I managed to get my way into the final of my clubs matchplay competition this year and played the final last weekend. My opponent is well known, for how should I put it, cheating. I decide at the start of the round to watch him like a hawk on every shot.
Things progress well all the way til the 18th, (i'm 1 up at this point) no sign of any cheating, fantastic I think. I hit 1st off the long par 4 18th tee and find the middle of the fairway, my opponent carves his drive into the thick rough on the right(don't often find them over there i think to myself). With me to play 1st I decide not to risk a shot of 200 yards into the wind over a ditch to the green, i'm thinking a bogey will be enough to secure a half, I hit a nice 6 iron down the middle.
We then start to look for my opponents ball and after a while I find it burried, a hack out at best as you can only just see the top of the ball. I then walk away to give the guy some space, some 20 yards away. When I next look I see him with a 3 wood in his hand where he smacks it on to the green. IMO there is no way he could have hit anything more than a PW from the lie he had. Anyway he ends up with par and I make 5, the dreaded extra holes. Luckily I make a 3 to his 4 on the 1st and win.
