  • President's Cup -- Weir beats Woods

Have to say as a Canadian I'm very happy to see Mike Weir take on the marquee bout against Mr. Woods.

The tournament in general was such a great exhibition sportsmanship.

Several friends from work went to Montreal on Thursday to watch. A great honour for Canada and I think we did a great job hosting the event.

Even though the Americans won in the end (their performance on Friday was quite impressive and difficult to rally against), the "Internationals" gave it their all. I think Choi capped off an amazing season with his performance.

    Very impressed.

I think we saw some of the best golf ever played this weekend.

Not just in the President's Cup but also at the Seve Trophy.
We should all play more match play. It is such a magnificent game!

Montreal hosted a great event, where the joy of playing golf was always visible over the battle for the win.

Weir took on Tiger in what can best be described as a rollercoaster of a golf match, and both were so keen to win, that one ended up losing. "Weirsy" surely deserved to win that match for all of Canada.

I can hardly wait for Ryder Cup next year!

I wondered, as even the commentators did, if even on a subconscious level Tiger took a little off of his game. By many accounts Weir is a very likeable guy who had been struggling with his game and health problems – he is a Canadian playing in Canada – and how good of a victory would it have been for Tiger to trounce him in theses circumstances – we are all human after all. Likewise, I was watching a fight recently with Roy Jones Jr. Roy Jones Jr had his opponent in all kinds of trouble – the commentator talked about what a “great finisher” Roy was and I watched him let the his opponent off the hook and I thought he did it deliberately – it certainly wasn’t an accident. The commentators later asked him what happened – and he said quite candidly that he was winning and didn’t see the point to having his opponent losing by being knocked out. For Tiger I am not saying it was a deliberate decision, rather his heart may not of been 100% towards winning, as it would have been had the situation been different and if he were playing Mickelson or someone else.

I saw the look on Tigers face when he lost his friday fourball with Furyk ... he did NOT look like somebody who likes to lose.

And if I remember correctly, the President's Cup wasn't safe at the time of Tiger's loss.

But sure, coming back from 3 down to 1 up in 5 holes, might have left Tiger a little bit on the comfortable side of things, not expecting Weir - with only 2 birdies on the card at that point - to birdie 17 and 18 and come back for the win.
That said, Tiger had only 3 birdies himself at that point and was even par, so it wasn't like a collapse. he didn't play all that well all day.

Well put. I was just speculating and your analysis seems dead on!

It's remarkable that the perceived driving distance between Mike Weir and Tiger Woods, it didn't seem to be too much of a factor during the game.
