  • The A, B, C, D, and F's

Well, the season's over, here's the self report:

Handicap - F: I wanted to get sub 20, but could never seem to get the game together at the same time to drop it into the 'teens. While I did shoot an 87 in a tournament (nice 90 bust!) it took me to 20. I couldn't follow up with anything substantial.

Driving - C: Nothing spectacular here. I end up left now instead of right (lots of pulls), but serious left to right movement has disappeared. Tee club selection is much improved.

Irons - B: Please keep in mind I'm a 23 capper. I've hit my irons much, much better than I ever have. But I still have a long way to go.

Chipping/Pitching - D-: I've got no short game. At all. I think I've narrowed it down to not finishing the swing (every chip/pitch is a stab/decel), but we'll see.

Putting - F: Feel? What's that? My putting has gotten worse this year instead of better.

All around improvement - C-: I'm coming to the conclusion that I now need tons of work on my fundamentals, and my mental game. The highlight was winning my flight at Club Champ again this year (where I shot a 96 on the first day and then backed it up with an 87].

I've got a long way to go - I'm working on a full turn under my chin and finishing my swing with passive arms as I've seen some great strikes with that swing. Although I'm also on a quest to lose weight (and gut), so I'm sure that will mess with my swing, too. The less gut I have to manouver around, the more orthodox my swing will become, I figure.

    hi lowpost
how many putts do you take in a avg round. the best way to drop shots of your handicap is to work on your short game and putting. i avg 30/32 putts a round and thats a saving of 4/6 shots on my handicap so it makes up for the holes i shoot 6 or 7 on.

      Hi Bill,

I had gotten down to 32 ppr, but have ballooned back to 35. My short game is quite suspect (although the other day chipping around my backyard, I experimented with keeping my head 'cemented' and turning my body around solid feet and solid head - pretty good results. I started fooling around with putting mechanics trying to get back to that 'no brain' place in putting (find a comfortable stroke, and go blank from there). I was there mid year (at 32 ppr) but tried to get a more 'comfortabler' stroke, and totally f***ed it up.

I realise that short game will drag my 'cap down faster than anything, so it's my focus this winter - nipping the ball perfectly.

The other focus that I have to have is that for my entire golfing life, I've tried to swing down the target line, irrespective of where my feet were. Now I'm trying to swing down my body line with mixed success.

It's like I'm back at square one.

cant help you with your round the body swing as I'm a down the line push shot player.
one thing i did take from my few hours of pro teaching the shore game was soft hand, it one thing he went over and over and i did find i was gripping to hard with my pitches and chips and had no feel to the shots. now when i have a chip or a pitch, even if its a full shot with a wedge i say over and over "soft hands" i found i can feel the shot now and am getting better at finding the distance too.
have you read Dave Pelz the short game bible
        cheers

Got the bible, love the bible. Still working on technique - I fight an upper body slide that gets my head ahead of the ball and a low running ball flight. I need to drill fundamentals hard - I plan to put some serious work in over the winter.
