It would seem some top pros.are more concerned with money rather than acquiring what they deem to be second rate titles.

    hi bampot
if you look at the money list in the USA you will see players about 200 that you never have heard off and there taking home $170.570 a year.
i think to some of them that is a nice way to earn, playing golf but never competing but still making a good living out of it.
i don't mind players being paid to appear if they have been winners in the past.
    cheers

OK, Bill ,I agree it is possible to make a good living without playing top class golf. Thank God Barclay's Scottish Open has refused to pay appearance money, their tournament has sufficient prestige to attract most high ranking pros without the inducement of appearance money.

        hi bampot
i do think there is a growing amount of players who only play to get a good cheque and its more about keeping there card year on year then ever thinking of winning. there guys that turn up and work hard and never win but there a some that seem to turn up and if going to miss the cut then its as if they can finish fast enough to get away from the course.
the days of Player and Trevino s****ing a living playing every week and having to win to feed there families are long gone.

i read once about a golfer that paid out almost $90.000 in plane and hotel bills in the USA in one year and he got most of it back in taxes, he only earned $56.000 playing golf that year.
hotels and plane travel were tax deductible and it turned out he paid almost no Tax on his yearly earnings so made almost $49.000 after tax.
not a bad way to live ????

          Guys,

I have absolutely no issues with this at all. This is what these guys do for a living - it is their job. If somebody was going to pay me simply to turn up at my desk and then do nothing when i got there then I would quite happily take their offer. I'm sure this is the case for most people.

The people at fault are the the spectators (whether at the course or on TV). If these spectators simply stopped watching these events then sponsors would not pay the 'big money' for these events.

Presumably a reference to Ernie and the Order of Merit?

Just to put the other side of the argument I believe he signed a 3 year deal with Singapore before the Volvo was scheduled to create a clash so to appear at Valderama he would have to be in breach of contract.

Fair enough you can't expect the Tour and the sponsors to set their schedule to suit two to three players but given the opportunity to pick up some easy end of season jam I'm not sure you can blame the golfers either.

              hi bdbl
your right in saying that Ell's had signed a 3 year deal and only has this year left to run, Westwood also signed to play there and both said the that the dates for the Volvo had not been set so they had no way of knowing when it would be played and the would not break there contract.
the pga will look at the dates for next year and try and make sure there is not a clash.

They do not pay appearance money for PGA events (now some of the end of the year events, corporate outings..), So making 170,000 for being 200th on the money list is strictly what he earned by making cuts and finishing high in tournements. It's not just showing up.

yes i agree that the have to make the cut to earn but a lot of the pros have that as there aim, make the cut and earn, not effort to try and win or put the work in to win, just enough to get past the cut. if you go round with the guys out of contention you see them act like it was a practice round. not all but some. there are some guy who have so much talent but don't need to work hard to keep just above the cut line to make a good living.

This is of course the source of the term 'Professional Golfer'

If you want to watch player playing for the love of it or the prestige of a title go watch your regional amateur competition, guys who do a nine to five and still manage to fit in time to play to scratch.

If someone was going to pay me £100000 to watch me do my job, I wouldnt stop them.

Monty is just p'd off cos he gets no appearance money cos he's a grumpy bastich who no one wants to watch toss his clubs around a course when he aint winning

I refuse to show up for a round unless someone promises to buy me a beer.
