  • Is it Just Me?!

I'm wondering if anyone else suffers from this.

Why oh why is it when I have spent all week long practicing my swing and end up hitting it beautifully and looking good on camera, do I instantly seem to forget the keys that I have learned when I play of a weekend?

Why oh why is it, when after hole 3 I realise things are not as they should be and were not a result of not warming up or hitting balls before-hand, do I attempt to then spend the next 13 holes trying to fix myself.

Then why oh why is it, after thinking about my swing and losing all touch and pace with my short game and hence shooting a poor number because I have been pre-occupied with my swing, do I always, without fail, every time, with alarming regularity, realise what I have been doing wrong when I'm standing on the 17th tee. Too bloody late mate!

I then proceed to play the last 2 holes in level or 1 under and am whistful of the shots and time lost and resolve to not do that again, only to go and do it the very next time out.

I liked my answer from the other thread.

We do practice things on the play-ground, and do not play simply accepting the outcome of the attempt.

        Hi Neil,

I don't think you are alone.

This season I have been playing really well in the range and then simply haven't consistently been able to transfer it to the course.

As with most people the 'mind' takes over and you cannot replicate what you know you are physically capable of - if I could find a solution for this this I'd be a very rich man.

Makes me wonder how well you would play on the range if you bet the guy next to you 50 cents a shot - closest to the pin.

Also makes me wonder how well you would play if they made a range with 3 inch rough, uneven lies and hardpan sand.

Ahhhhh! I'm not alone then. I just had a disastrous round yesterday after a wickedly good round at the range Saturday. I could not miss at the range, hitting all my irons solidly. Went out Sunday for a round and could not hit an iron in the air to save my life. My putting felt really good (sank a couple of 10+ footers) but it was not nearly enough to save me when it took 4-5 iron shots just to get on the green.

Dr Bob has a word or two to say about this - indeed, whole chapters in Golf Is Not A Game Of Perfect. In essence, he says one should never try to change one's swing in a round of golf, and distinguishes between practice mentality and 'tructing' mentality. A great book...

If my game starts going wrong or even starts off wrong then the place I look first is my takeaway. The takeaway is where the swing will become too far inside or outside, too steep or too shallow for the club in use. Look there first and change it if its wrong.

Butt end pointing at bellybutton on the way back, ball to target line on the way down.

you are bang on with that one brian
all of a sudden ive been afflicted with the sh*nks.
took a few hits at the range to realise my takeaway was coming on the inside and so too flat.
soon remedied it though and back to hitting sweet irons again 3skills style

                      Neil,

During 2007 I have been working hard on trying not to think of the swing during the round. I'm trying to trusting what I have practiced.

I have one swing key and leave it at that.

Stick to your game plan. Accept the results. Don't be too hard on yourself.

Often the last couple of holes proceeding c r a p ones are good because one doesn't care.

As for the shanks Slats - more than likely coming out of the shot, eager to see the result.

This is something that I am aware of, although with me it tends to go in cycles.

In the past I've made swing changes, learned the shots it gave me, trusted it and starting playing well, really not caring if it went wrong.

The difficulties have arisen now that I understand more completely where I'm going with my swing. My problem is I know I'm not there quite yet and naturally take every opportunity to work on it until I get what I want. I'm close. Even when I'm not hitting it as I would like I'm still hitting it better than my partners, but it's that niggling thought (think I posted about this on another thread) that gradually worms its' way in!

Totally agree that Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Rotella is a top book. I adhere to it when I'm not questioning my technique. I know it works. But I want to combine it with the sound swing I want.

Guess I should just stop moaning and get on with it!

I'm looking forward to getting to the stage where I totally trust my swing and can practice on the course (as per Greg's subliminally suggestive post!). When I get where I want to get, the practice ground will not employed as much as the course.

                        Roll on springtime!

                          hi neil
in the summer i often go to the course at 6am and play a practice round, i have an hour before the green keepers turn up and i can hit a few ball off the tee and have a couple of approach shots to and try diffrent things on the course. i find it so much better doing it on the course i play rather than the range. its also great going right to a hole you have trouble with and trying diffrent thing with no worry about hitting a bad shot or out of bounds or over water, the first hole (par 5) at my course is a dog leg to the right with a lake on the right side. you have to carry 240 to clear the lake and cut the dogleg or play along the side of the lake and leave 300yrd to the green, i was never sure if i could clear the lake and did not was to try on my first shot so never gave it a go for months, so i went one morning and hit 10 old balls and only one made it so i know never to try it unless there is a strong tail wind, after that i started playing early mostly a Monday morning and yes the course know i ply that early.
i have even done this when playing with my friends, maybe playing 4 holes before going back to the start to meet them at 8am for a round of golf.
when the dark nights and morning come in i have to give it up and just settle for a round once a week.
i find it helps so much on planing a round and finding what shots work and what don't. and there is no pressure on you at all and you don't hit the shot you want drop another ball and try and get it right.
one thing i never do is try and change things when playing a real round of golf, i work with what i have that day and just live with it if I'm not swing well.
i find if its a bad day then i don't try any risky shots and try and play well within myself. over the years i found this works and i still put in a decent score when I'm playing badly.
                          cheers.

Also Neil, positives about swing adjustments I have found is that I understand the causes are when I hit a c r a p one. I have my indicators. If I pull I have come ott or if I hit a high fade I haven't released properly.

Perhaps you could look at it that way, ie, next time after hitting the poor shot focus on why you hit THAT bad shot in preparation for the next one.

Am I making any sense - I'm having a blonde moment.....
