  • What an Absolute Pleasure

I have just finished watching a marvelous DVD.

I managed to find on Ebay the episode of Shells Wonderful World of Golf where Sam Snead plays Ben Hogan. It arrived today. I've not been this excited since the last time I was this excited!

Watching those two, even on telly, is an experience.

Hogan hit every fairway and every green and finished on -3 compared to Snead who finished level. Imagine putting for birdie from no further than 25 feet on every hole.

The sheer consistency of Hogan is breathtaking. He has such nonchalant control of the club. I was surprised that he wasn't a long hitter, but when he was that accurate he didn't need to be.

He averaged around 260 yards from the tee and went into greens with anything from a 4 wood to a wedge. His shots never left the flag.

Nothing in the modern game compares. Not even Tiger. The class is indescribable.

Snead was lovely to watch, but he seemed to have the pulls on that particular day in 1962! Beautiful swing. Very easy on the eye, and a decent putter. Pretty long for a wooden club. He out-drove Hogan on quite a few occasions.

Hogan, on the other hand, never looked like he was going to mis-hit a shot. And when he was always putting for birdie, you just had to wait until one (or in this case 4; he had one 3 putt for a solitary bogey) inevitably dropped.

I understand from folklore that Hogan wasn't a great putter. Imagine how good he would have been if he was!

I would recommend anyone to get this DVD. It's a real throw-back and an absolute must for golf enthusiasts. It's got some very interesting extras on it too.

I'm gonna watch it again and again and again...........................and maybe again right now!

    hi Neil
can you imaging what Hogan would be like with the modern clubs we now use. i remember Garry Player saying on his 72 birthday that he his a ball longer with his driver now than he could when he was strong and in his 20s.
    nice post.
    cheers
