"Slope Rating"?

I hear USA has slope rating because handicaps will differ to how easy/difficult a course is? Thats a damn good idea. Something the uk definitely needs i think.
Anyone else think uk needs it? But can someone explain how they work out the slope? I heard pine valley has the highest..just wondering if someone could give us some information on it all. Cheers

I'm a golfaholic, no question about that. Counseling wouldn't help me. They'd have to put me in prison, and then I'd talk the warden into building a hole or two and teach him how to play. ~Lee Trevino

Here is what they do:

They count the number of water hazards, sandtraps, OB and other factors that make golf dificult and they apply a number to each element. Then they add them up for each hole and and up all the holes. Hard courses have around 140 points and easy ones around 100. The handicap system takes these numbers in consideration when you go from one course to another.
