    Re: A new MAJOR?

    hi
back in the early 70e i watched J Nicklaus and B Crenshaw play 9 holes at the old course in Musselburgh, the used clubs from the 40s and had hickery shafts. i dont remember the score or who won but both player well with the old clubs a i dint think they had used clubs like that before. Ben seemed to know all the clubs but Jack had to rely on the cady to pick what club to use. the clubs were not numbered but had names that was also back when they used the small ball when Jack and Ben used the big ball when playing at the open at muirfield later in the week.

So, for example, we could have a NEW European Open - replacing "The Open" and the current European (sorry R&A), an Asian / Australasia Open and a US Open (replacing all 3 of the current US Majors) - obviously the qualification criteria for these is open to debate. The top whatever of each of those would qualify for a World Championship - location tb rotated around the tours.

I can hear the squeals of outrage, especially from the States, already but the current set up is pretty much based on the whim of Jack Nicklaus and is unjustified particularly in the case of the Masters due to the nature of the Augusta club.
Yes, I would go with that!

        hi
i think the Open is already a world wide competition and has been for as long as i can remember. player come from all over the world to play in it and there has been winers form every part of the world over the years. i think you must keep the Open and maybe the Masters as both are so special not just to the players but also to the supporter's both on the TV or that turn up and pay to watch at the course, ask most pros and they will tell you that to win the open is the most treasured prise and its not just about the money.
you already have the us open and the Canadian open, Wentworth' world matchplay, sun city in S/A. and the aus open and the New Zealand open.
all really big tournaments and players are finding it hard to play in the big tournaments now as you get two in the same week, just look at Ells and Westwood a few weeks ago getting bad press because they played in the HSBC and not over here.
i think we have enough big tournaments and having more you will get the top player cherry picking what ones to play in and other looking to get points to on the Ryder cup team and not playing in tournaments where there is no point up for grabs, that then gives a weaker field to the none points tournaments.
keep it as it is, no more Majors to be added.
        cheers

maybe have a competition where the maker of the clubs are picked in a draw against players, so the played don't know the make they are to play with till the start of that week. then have two days to practice with the clubs that have been drawn before playing the tournament with them.
