  • More Than One Axis?

    I have always thought that the axis in the golf swing was the back bone. Not that I thought about it much in the first place, but that is what I thought on those very rare ocassions when the subject came up..

    Now I have read that in addition to the back bone, there are two other swing axis we use. On the back swing we swing around our back bone, plus our back leg. On the down swing and follow through we still swing around the back bone, but the other axis is our front leg. So what this article saying is that the golf swing has an axis that is simular to an upside down "Y".

    Maybe I am just behind the times on this one.

    I think this is very open to interpretation.............................mind you, when is golf not!

    I can see why the front leg could be added as an axis as the line essentially carries on from the front foot right up the back once we get that spinal tilt away from the target.

    Not so sure about the rear leg. To use that as an axis conjures pictures of a reverse pivot in my head. It supports weight, rather than aids the turn in my eyes.

      I guess we have to pivot around the legs by rotation of the hips with a little flexing of the spine. It's quite a complex set of movements when you consider it.

        As I've mentioned in recent posts I've been reading a book called Mind Swings [ Amazon.co.uk: Mind Swings: Thinking Way to Better Golf: Books: Richard Masters,John Burns] which has reinforced the thought that its probably best "not to consider it" - the complex set of movements that is.

        If we have ever, and we all have, hit a great shot, then perhaps we already know what we need to do and ironically its only our learning that holds us back from playing the game. Less may well be more, so we should just empty our minds and let our instincts or sub conscious take over without worry about the bio-mechanics.

          I've finally (in the last two playable months) stopped thinking about little things in the golf swing, and simply focused (for me) on being balanced, turning around my spine on the backswing, setting the club at the top of my swing and then forgetting about it, turning my hips on the downswing and staying in balance the whole time.

          I've decided to let the inverse Y, pump drill, inside swing the outside, waiter position wrist c0ck/cup stuff fade away. I have had some very remarkable (for me) ballstriking just turning and turning with a set and forget.

          GJS - go back to not thinking about it!
