With the addition of adjusting the lie on a standard set I don't think you're a million miles off the mark.

I am not fully convinced that the lie angle from a standard set will be far enough out for the average Joe to notice any difference.

Not fully convinced either but as my social worker tells me, I'm special not average and with my stance / posture / swing flaws, a 2 degree alteration moved me nearer to a centre strike from my "standard" heel biased shot.

So, especially using the freebie Direct Golf UK "lie check" offer, I don't think there's any harm in it; if you think it helps your game go for it.

          hi Brian
sorry but i don't agree that a standard set of clubs off the peg and a set that is fitted and made for you will feel the same to a high handicapper. i know when i went from black code (standard lie) to orange code (2% flat) it made a big difference to my set up, i use to have a 2 plane swing but when i started using the flatter clubs i bent over more and started using a 1 plane swing. it was not something i tried to do it just happened due to the clubs. i also find it very easy to fade the irons even a bit of fade on the 9 iron, but only a few feet and most of that on landing. i use ping zings and there are said to be the most forgiving clubs ping ever made and some say you cant draw or fade using them but i can fade but its harder to draw using a flatter club it seems.
i do think if you had a standard set and a fitted set side by side most players would see a differences and the only ones that would not are the few player that standard set up and fitted are the same.
          are your clubs fitted Brian???
cheers and have a drink on me for xmas.

            Hey Brian,

Is the asbestos itchy? Metal zippers get hot, and plastic ones melt... LOL

See, I hold the opposite view - I think that Joe Hacker benefits most from properly fit clubs - as clubs that are the right length will help to get them into a proper address position more often, and properly set lie angles will not have them changing their swing for directional misses due to improper lie angles. Please remember that a 48° PW that's out 1° for lie represents an 11 foot miss at 100 yards. Since most players use a PW anywhere from 130 to 150 yards (at full swing) it's a 14-16 foot miss (5-6 yards) from your normal range. So if you're out 2°, then now we're talking 10-12 yards - if the pin isn't in the middle of the green, you could make a technically perfect swing and STILL miss the green, even though you were setup completely proper.

So lets get Joe Hacker into gear that fits and helps promote a good swing, and from there let's let him learn to swing.

My point was that for most golfers, improvements in playing skills would by far outweigh benefits from club fitting or make. I am not advocating that people should not have their clubs fitted.

In your case Bill you have played to a single digit handicap so it would benefit you, most people that play golf play nearer 28 and have inconsistent swings.

I did have my clubs fitted but fortunately the standard shafts and lie were just right.

Cheers Bill, have a good one.

                Re: Shaft Flex Importance?

I didn't mean to get you guys off on a tangent! But when I was a double digit handicap, I purchased a set of Henry Griffits custom fit clubs and they worked well until my swing improved. They have made a market for themselves by capitalizing on the players flaws! If you slice they sell you a closed clubface...If you hook they sell you and open clubface! While I don't advocate this now that I'm a five, for the average 28 that doesn't have the luxury of hitting balls 4-5 times a week like I do, they are a temporary fix to his nemesis.

I am going to a clubfitter after Christmas to get the heaviest, stiffest shafts that I can comfortably swing. I played this morning and had to swing really, really easy to not pull the ball due to the TT S300 stiff not being stiff enough in my new irons. Thanks for all the input and Merry Christmas to all!
