  • Slope Rating??

I have just bought an Excel program for computing handicaps and it asks for the Slope Rating of the course. What is this and where could I find it? Thanks.

You can find the slope and course rating on each course's score card.

      Re: Slope Rating??

The slope rating is a system used in the USA (not sure if it's used anywhere else) that classifies a course by its scale of difficulty, the slope rating is used in a formula when calculating handicaps (Score - Course Rating) x 113 / Slope Rating) it can then be used to adjust a handicap depending on the actual course being played and its rating. A rating of 113 is the slope for a course of average difficulty.

I dunno why we can't use that in the UK. Too much if difficulty is based on length over here which is a joke and leads to very dodgy hole S.I's.

We use slope/rating in Canada, too. While the RCGA is governed under the R&A, we follow the USGA's lead most of the time. (IOW, our ruleset follows the USGA, but our conforming equipment list is from the R&A. My .860 COR driver was legal 3 days ago...)

Personally, I like the idea of the SSS changing. Pin positions, tee chock placements and weather all contribute to how hard a course plays. My home course hasn't been sloped or rated in a decade... and grounds has chopped down quite a few trees and filled in a few traps.
