  • Lack of swing speed with driver

Hi all - this is my first post so hope I don't annoy anyone with this!

I've just got one of those swing speed radar gadgets. It shows me that my swing speed is faster with my hybrid (Ping G10 15) and my 7 wood (AGT with an AJ Tech x355? shaft) than with the driver. Both swing at easilly in the 100-110 range. The 7 wood carries about 180yards.

I'm never trying to swing hard but my driver (Cobra LD) struggles to go past 100mph. It carries only about 200-220.

My G10 3 wood (with stock Reg Flex shaft) carries nearly as far as my driver.

I feel like if I had 10 degrees of loft on the J Tech shaft it would carry about 250!

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Rob

      Hi There,

One of the main reasons for lack of swing speed and bad shots with the driver and three wood is the same..

What happens with the driver you look down the fairway and then react with an almighty lash in a vain attempt to launch the ball, where a little bit of patients and tempo will get the ball further.

The technical answer is most waste the speed to early in the swing, casting from the top, by the time you get to the ball the power has gone.

It's the same with a three wood of the deck on a par 5 or long par 4, trying to reach the distance with your body by swinging hard, actually it's the opposite you need, a nice wide backswing and wait for the club to come back to the ball, it's a long club and it takes that fraction longer to return to impact, most people slice etc etc simply because they can't wait and let the body turn.

      Hope this helps

      Ian.

Re: Lack of swing speed with driver

        hi
have you tried impact tape on the face of the driver and the woods to see if you may be missing the sweet spot area and that can lose you 10 to 20 years.( talc works, just put some on a rag and dad the face.)
also on the big headed drivers like you have, the sweet spot is higher on the face almost 3/4 of the way up. if your hitting the ball in the middle of the face(middle-top to bottom) then you could be losing distance, with your other woods the sweet spot is in the center of the face and you could be hitting them in the center but also hitting the driver in the center and thus losing distance.
one other thing is you tees with the new drivers you need a big tee. 3 to 4 inch tees. with the lower tees you tend to hit the ball in the middle and that below the sweet spot.
        cheers
        bill

I'm not able to post my swing yet, but thanks for all your replies - very thought provoking.

You may be loosing power with your driver due to the way you use your hands. take a look at this video and see if it helps you.
