  • Mizuno MX-25 v's MP-60

    Hi,
I have two questions here. I am returning to golf after years of spending my weekends watching my kids from a touchline and have been trying to get back into the game.
Last year I invested in a set of Mizuno MX-25 irons with regular shafts. A local pro shop has a great deal on Mizuno MP-60 irons and I was wondering if I should invest in these.
My handicap is coming down (currently 20), I am well build with a medium fast swing and hit the ball high and long. Accuracy is where I need to improve.

Would I benefit from the MP-60's?
If so should I consider stiff shafts or stay with regular?

    Thanks

I really can't see any upside to changing from MX-25s to MP-60s at the 20 handicap level. Plenty of 12s and 14s do really fine with MX-25 type clubs. They're perfectly good irons.

Set composition is probably what you might be better thinking about. Are you playing the fourteen clubs which give you your best chance to score?

If your shafts are too flexible, you'll be hitting too high and probably, depending on your swing plane, hooking the ball. Don't switch to a stiffer shaft over vanity if you like the Rs. Bobby Jones, who was not a 20, hit hickory shafts which felt a lot like a graphite A-Flex.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a very traditional composition.
Taylor Made Burner 9.5 Driver, 3, 5 woods
      Mizuno MX-25 3-PW,
      Mizuno MP-T 51 & 56 wedges
Odyssey White Hot Two ball putter.

With irons, tendancy is to draw/hook unless I'm tired, then it becomes a fade.

I Play MP-60's and have done so since hcp 28. So it's not an impossible combination at hcp 20.

HOWEVER - I'm quite sure, that I would have dropped my handicap faster using clubs like the MX-25s. The MP-60s WILL punish you for off-center shots and kill you if you have a tendency to hit it fat.
The MX-25 are probably the clubs I should've be playing for a season or 2 still.

I'm a 16 hcp now and hopefully still improving, and the MP-60s are still quite a challenge on occasion.

The MP-60s themselves will not help your accuracy. The stiffer shaft might, but hardly noticeable at hcp 20, I would suppose.
