The chart looks like it came straight out of Tom Wishon's latest fitting book, and the editors popouts are proven incorrect by Trackman (in that AoA doesn't impact spin - you generate as much spin 'hitting down' with your driver as you do 'hitting up'. Granted, where on your driver you hit it directly impacts spin. So the only time the up/down proves true is if you're also hitting low on the face while hitting down and high while hitting up.

BTW, a +5 AoA is ridiculous - it's approaching LD territory. You really have to be going up to get to +5.

The article was written by the designer of Trackman, do you suggest he doesnt know how AoA works? Did you read the attached link?

Bubba Watson is considered to be a fair driver of the ball and has a +5 Deg Angle of Attack. With positive AoA you need a less lofted driver as the ascending blow gets the ball up with a lower spin rate. Descending AoA's require additional loft to get the ball up but as this increases spin distance can be sacrificed unless you can swing very fast..

At this point I'm suggesting that Trackman is flip-flopping. If they're now suggesting that AoA effects spin, that's a tune change from a year ago.

I'm well aware of Bubba's AoA - and it's LDesque. But his driver swing is more like a LD guy than the average PGA Tour player.

But yes, I'm suggesting that AoA doesn't effect spin on a driver the same way it does with irons. You're not compressing the ball against anything except the face with the driver. It's also a much more direct strike with the driverversus the glancing blow that irons impart - which automatically imparts less overall spin.

So, if that means that I don't agree with Trackman, than I'll say "yes, Trackman needs to learn more about the role of spin and AoA."

You may be mixing AoA and effective loft. The angle AoA with any club does not change spin if the ball is struck on the same point of the face, it affects launch angle, spin rate is a factor of club loft and shaft flex. To hit the ball longest given the same set of conditions (swing speed, contact position, shaft & loft) you need to have a positive AoA so that ideal launch conditions can be achieved. With negative AoA's more loft must be used to obtain an optimum launch angle and that will create additional spin, increasing overall trajectory thus loosing distance.

Interesting article you've shown us, BrianW, thanks. I've been watching a few slo-mo Swinghub vids on YouTube of tour players at impact. With the 3 wood they definitely have a downward (negative angle) blow to the ball, whereas the driver, they would have more or less a level angle of attack. The logo on the ball hardly moves at all for the first few inches. I rememeber the black pen mark on my ball when hitting from a vector launch monitor that my ball is spinning rapidly after impact. I have the angle of attack on the report that was given to me, which I will check and let you guys know.

I have had success in teeing the ball about lower than my normal height. I've realised that I've been teeing the ball way too high so that about 90% of the ball is above the crown of the head! I now tee it so only the top third is showing, and this produces a far lower trajectory. The negative impact of this is that the shot does tend to slice more often and I am not sure why? Maybe the low tee forces me to approach the ball on a more level angle, thereby utilising the true loft which is lower than my steeper angle which a high tee would encourage, and therefore adds more sidespin?

How exactly does a heavier shaft, as much as 10gm more, effect my swing? Does it affect launch more than loft? I'm either considering lowering the loft to 8.5 or getting a heavier shaft, or both. Also, I've always steered away from "high launch" shafts, but many single figure handicappers I know swear by them. Why would I go for one of these over a normal shaft? I thought such shafts were for people who have difficulty in getting the ball up.
