Yes they can, but flatness of face is also a consideration. By the time you've worn out the grooves, you've also likely concaved the face.

I remain sceptical on the benefits of sharp grooves. I can see that grooves assist to wick away water and grass fluid but I think they assist little with creating spin. The surface roughness of the face IMO contributes most to spin generation.
