  • Do i need to change my clubs?

    Hi everyone,
I wonder if you could give me some advice.
I am a female golfer and have been told by my male golfer friends to change my driver as it has a 14 degree loft, one comment on friday was "she drives the ball like a bloke" another comment was that I was losing 30 yards because of the loft. Should I just try a different driver
or think about getting a different set completely. I use ping G5s at the moment.

    Hope you can help

What's your ball speed, launch angle, and spin rates with your usual ball? 14 degrees may be just fine.

      Hi Peave,

It is somewhat dependant on your strength and club head speed.

The higher loft for most casual women players is common, and the keyword is casual. That predisposes that they may not play often and are not as strong, or they may not have a sound swing to hit the ball as square. Women pros can play stiff shafts and lofts of 8 degrees, but they work out, and have the swings to manage that.

With the Pings, you should have been fitted properly. I believe Bll Reed has referred to special open fitting days offered by Ping in the U.K.
Otherwise, you can go for fittings at a good store or independent golf fitter. If you id where you are, perhaps the readers could recommend a source.

Ping are great. I used to have several Ping lines. In Canada, Ping used to have a policy that they would give free loft/lie testing and adjustments for their irons, no matter if the equipment was new, second or older hand. They made the adjustment and paint the new colour code infill. I don't know if they still do that. In my case, I bought Black (neutral) lie and I was tested to be 2 degrees flat (Green).

Re: Do i need to change my clubs?

Thank you for your advice. I have no idea what my swing speed or launch angle etc is! I was fitted with my pings but that was before I started to
play. By comparison with my male friends, when I hit my driver it has a much higher ball flight than theirs.
Any more help would be greatly appreciated.

Without some solid numbers, everything is just guesswork.

Do you have any idea what your swing speed is?

            hi Peave
go back to your ping shop and ask if they would check your setting.
most ping shops will do this no charge. the other way is to look for a ping demo day near you, ping list them on there internet site. if you take your driver to a demo day they will test and adjust for free. also check your not requiring a diffrent set up now you have grooved your swing better.
i have used there demo days and there very helpful and go out there way to help you and they have never tried to sell me newer equipment but have asked me to try out the new ping range.
ping drivers do tend to have a higher flight then a lot of other drivers on the market. even with there hight flight the don't seem to lose more then a few yards over the longest drivers out there so you driver might be spot on.
the guy that told you to change did he know about pings as if you don't use them them you may not know it could be the shaft and the head matching as well as the loft that gives you a hight flight.
ping match there shafts as well as there heads.
if you walk in and buy a ping club and walk out with it then there not a real ping dealer as all pings have to be ordered and made and it takes 7 to 10 days, ping don't sell drivers over the counter.
the ping G5 is still one of the top selling drivers world wide.
            cheers

Re: Do i need to change my clubs?

              Hi peave,

That is well you were tested.

Now that you have started to play, the store you bought the club from, and presumably which also tested you, should allow you a re-test to see if anything has changed, and confirm to you what your swing speed, launch angle and ball spin rate are. This in turn will permit you to feel confident that you have the right fit. With these figures available, we would be in a better position to offer suggestions.

Regarding clubhead speed, one could get a rough idea from knowing how far you hit various clubs, say a 7 iron, or what do you use to hit a shot 130 yards for instance.

The higher flight you say you have could be a normal and desired trajectory (it's difficult to say without seeing it), and it may be that the men are hitting the ball thin and getting low flights. It may be your choice of ball. It could be that you are hitting the ball very (too) high on the face. In this regard, do you have ball marks on the top of the face or even on the crown? You can have this checked with impact tape, or you can do it yourself by applying masking tape on the face and see where the ball marks are when you hit the ball.

                hi
just to add to what Ted said. if you use talc on a cloth on the club face then that works like impact tape. use a talc and a cloth and keep it in an old old tin and give the face a light dab it works great and it cheep.
                all the best

you said your clubs were 2 degrees flat then that is orange.
                  2 degrees upright is green.
on the new pings orange is 2.25 degrees flat
and on green code it 2.25 upright.
                  cheers

                    Hi Bill,

You are right. That was the Ping Eye 2's which I had in the '80's. Actually, that was a surprise fpr me, as I figured I would be flat. One of the effects it had was it got me drawing the ball, whereas previously I was fading it.

                      hi Ted
i still use a ping eye 2 one iron. not found another one iron club i can hit better.
it one club i always seem to be able to hit the fairway with and my go-to club when the fairways tight.
my clubs are orange code and i fade and have a flat swing and the orange code seems to suit me game better than the black code i was first fitted with back in the 80s when i had my ping K1. then had my ping eyes in the 90s and now i still have old pings in my ping Zing 2s but there just so forgiving and i seem to be able to fade with them at ease.
Tried the ping G10 but there did not seem a lot between them to me other than the smaller heads.
                      cheers
