  • Titleist AP1 Shafts

I just purchased a set of AP1's from the my local pro shop. They have the standard S300 HL shafts on them. I went to the course to play them and could not hit them I was topping and grounding the club the times I did hit them somewhat clean they were worm burner. The clubs felt very heavy to me compared to my TaylorMade R7 Draws. I was wondering if it would make a difference trading them back in for the AP1's with R300 HL shafts in them. I liked the R7's felt and could hit them descent but on my irons all my shots go left so I wanted to get out of the Draw clubs. The shafts on My R7's were the stock t-step 90. My swing speed is only around 80-83 mph and i usually shoot around 100 and I usually play around 36 holes a week. Can someone please give me some advice

    Hi triton,

The S300 is in the mid stiff range of flex. If your swing speed is correct, it would seem that the flex may not be suited for you. I personally can't get optimum performance with a stiff shaft and I have good fundamentals and score in the low eighties. My speed is between 85-90. I also find many of the standard stiffs feel heavy for me. I'm a swinger and count on tempo and timing.

The T-90 is a reasonably light weight shaft at 90gms, so that is what you were likely noticing, when you say they felt right, as it would allow for faster speed and feel for your swing. Also, the T-90 comes as both a regular and stiff. Is it possible the flex you had was a regular?

Regarding the R7 draw club, it may be academic if you got rid of them, but is it possible that the draw bias may not have been the reason that had you hitting the ball left? Did you check out your swing path and/or your face angle at impact? Here are a couple of threads which might be of interest:

My personal feeling at this point is you should have been fitted for regular flex, unless you are looking ahead to improving your swing and speed over the next while, and you can grow into the stiff flex.

      Rotator,

Thanks for your reply. The r7's I had were reg flex. I was not sure about the s300 shafts on the titleist but went with them because Last month I went to a Titleist fitter for driver and He set me up with the Titleist D2 11.5* VOODOO stiff flex shaft. I have always read go with a weaker flex for my swing speed but I thought this guy knew what he was talking about but that is whole nother can worms. I will trade them back in for the r300 shafts and see what happens. Thanks for your help.

        Hi triton,

Regarding the driver fitting, I think the fitter was giving you the higher loft (11.5) for the optimum launch angle, the stiff Voodoo for less spin. Stiffer shafts also have more control of accuracy (stability).

Regarding the Voodoo stiff, when it came to drivers and fairway woods, I really never felt much of a difference between stiff flex and regular flex. I could play stiff shafts of some drivers I've used, and they felt fine. It also depends on the make of the shafts. There is a variance in the relative degrees of flex between different makes of shafts, so a soft stiff of one may be close to a firm regular of another. I don't know where the Voodoo stacks up in this regard.
