  • Dunlop DDH

When I read the threads about longest balls etc, nobody mentions the Dunlop range such as the DDH. I thought that they were supposed to be very long balls. I tend to use them. So, if I bought some of the more expensive bigger name long balls am I likely to do any better?

best thing to do is experiment. balls like the DDH are great for straight line distance but absolutely useless when it comes to pitching.chipping and putting.
for a low cost option try the srixon soft feel, at £12 a dozen you get good distance but a lot more feel for the short game shots

Another good compromise ball is the Wilson Staff DX2 Soft.

I've been trying them out over the last few weeks and am quite impressed with their all round performance - apart from a tendency to fly OOB

As far as straight distance is concerned, I've found nothing longer than the Pinnacle Gold Long Drive - easily 10 yards longer than any other ball I've played (I've hit 3 or 4 drives over 300 yards with this ball, normal 'peak' drives run between 280-290 carry and roll in summer). I understand this has been replaced by the Pinnacle FX Long.

That is interesting. I was out with my DDH today and found a Callaway with a red V on it. It also stated Big Bertha. I thought "do what you are told" and I put away my DDH and played the Callaway. It was great! It went about the same distance as my DDH but felt completely different around the greens. My putting confidence improved considerably. I will give it a longer trial.

            hi
i use to use the Dunlop DDH wither there hex pattern dimples.
i found they would fly lower than my top flight and were good in the wind on the links courses i played. greens are always soft and spongy on links courses up here in Scotland as it rains so much so stopping the ball was not so much a problem.
i also found you had to work more to get them to fade so i take it they spin less than the top flight (T) XL i use now.
            cheers

Apologies if I've got this wrong Ben, but from your posts over the years I've had you tagged, alongside me, as one of natures shorter hitters.

Those distances are not short by any means. I think I saw you post about some new coaching (rotational?) that you were doing; do you put the improvement down to that? And has the new distance translated into lower scores?

If the answer to both questions is "Yes", then point me in that direction

No, no - there was one summer, 2 or 3 years ago, where I just started hammering my driver. It was at the same time that I started putting the Gold LD into play.

Last year I made the 'mistake' of measuring my distances in the spring - full of rust, but when the course was soft. But even last year, I drove a 303 yard par 4 with what felt like the the slowest of swings. Granted it was as slight dogger, so I probably only carried it 270 (as it finished on the green, smack dab in the middle), but I also absolutely flushed it.

For the most part, I'd put my carry between 240 and 250 for a 22 degree day with little wind.

I'm still learning motions with the new swing, but my ballstriking is getting better already.
