  • Latest drivers surprise

As Fathers Day is approaching, I was invited by the family to select a new driver. I was quite shocked. The Pro picked me out Taylor Made, Callaway, Mizuno, Ping and a couple of others. My old Ping SI3 with 11 degree loft and reg shaft beat all of them. So, have drivers not come on that much or am I fortunate just to have a club that totally suits me?

I'll say yes and yes. Drivers have not come on that much. Granted, the newer ones with the bigger heads will offer more yards when you miss the sweet spot, but if the pro didn't get the loft right (or the stock shaft doesn't do it for you) then your current driver will win.

Did you hit them all on a sim or at the range?

Further to what LowPost42 says, I remember in the days of the Callaway Great Big Berthas and such, that the stock shafts (even the so called stiffs) were too wimpy for strong swingers. The heads were great, and once the MOE shafts were swapped out for a Proforce or such, the club became a weapon.

That is 2 really interesting posts. Yes lowpost it was on the range. And, yes. They were all standard shafts. The shafts did seem a bit whippy compared with my old driver. I tried one so called stiff shaft but it appeared about the same as my old regular. Good news then. I can keep looking but check the shafts.

Got sorted with a driver eventually. A guy made up a Ping G10 with regular shaft and 10.5 loft. I hit that well at least as good as my Si3 or perhaps a touch better. Then the guy said he had a p\x one in almost identical but with a regular\soft shaft. I tried that and could not really notice any difference. So, as it was £50 cheaper, I went for it. I was amazed on the first hole at my course! After the drive, the best I can usually do is a 7 iron approach. But after my drive this time, I used a lob wedge!!! Mind you bit of a following wind and hard fairway. I did not match that drive the rest of the 9 holes but definately an improvement on my usual. Fingers crossed to knock off a couple of strokes now.
