  • Differance (if any) between a Driver and 1 Wood?

    Hey Guys,

Just wondering... I think that a 1 Wood is the original form of a driver as it looks to be able to be hit off the fairway, while most modern drivers are not, is this correct?

    A 1 wood is a club with a loft of 8-10 degrees. A 2 wood is a club with a loft of 11-13 degrees. A 3 wood is a club with a loft of 14-16 degrees.

    So generally speaking, your 1w is 9 degrees, 2w is 12, 3w is 15, 4w is 18, 5w is 21 and 7w is 24 give or take a degree.

What's happened is that 1 woods have increased in size (and there are even some 3 woods that have, but have been stamped "1" or "high launch".)

Nowadays, "Driver" is your lowest lofted club over 38".

      hi
back in the old days in Scotland golfer had only 6 clubs.
long nose :- a driver a bit like a long walking stick with a curve at the top.
bulgers:- i bit like a 3 wood and with a shorter shaft and a more pronounced Head that the long nose.
fairs:- a smaller head club to the Bulgers and shorter shaft. later on called fairway clubs.
spoons:- still wooden headed as metal was so hard to get but looked more like some of the wooden headed putter you still get but with more loft. when metal started to become easer to get in the late 1700 spoons had metal head.
niblick:- like the spoons but with more loft became a like a wedge in the 1920s.
      cleek:- a putter
in the 1800 they started to number the clubs and the long nose was 1 and for some reason the Bulgers were 3s and fairs 5. spoons 7s and niblick were gived the number 9.
as clubs were a added they were given even numbers.
no number was given to the putter.
      cheers
      Bill
