  • Buying a new set

Hi gang, just won €400 in local lotto draw and i'm thinking of buying a new set of irons. I've only ever had one set that were second hand and cost me €100 (wilson fatshaft graphite shafts), I hit ok with them and have kind of a slow swing. Any recommendations out there?? looking for a forgiving iron with regular shafts. I play off 13ish.
    So what do you think?

That's an easy one...Ping.If you don't like them you can usually sell them for close to what you paid.

      Hi JP,

What ever you do please make sure that you take the time to go to a club fitter to ensure that the clubs are the right ones for you not for anyone else. Like buying shoes we are all different personally I tried 7 different brands before finally settling for a relatively unknown but high quality brand at home in Australia best thing I have ever done. The clubs fit me, fit my swing, and my game has been in a constant upward curve of improvement (mind you I am still capable of playing a shocker.) and the game is an absolute enjoyment when you know you are getting the best out of your kit.
      Cheers Wayne

Don't know if they have "Demo Days" at a range close to where you live, but if they do, take advantage of it. I was quite happy with my Ping G10s until I tried some Callaway FTs at a demo day last spring. They just felt more comfortable with my swing and seemed to cut the rough a little easier. On the other hand, I didn't care much for the Nike Victory Reds, which many people love. Having 5-10 different brands with different lengths and lies of each to hit and compare can be a little overwhelming, but it sure beats relying on reviews or the recommendations of others.

Also, be patient with your new clubs. It may take a while to adjust to new set even if they are better quality. Unfortunately, new clubs won't change your swing flaws, but at least you won't be wondering how many strokes you could save if only you had better equipment.

I stand corrected Wayne ...I missed the word "new" referring to the type of set he was buying.Definitely find a demo day,but if you really want to do it right have the clubfitter make you a set of irons.Make sure he uses tape and a "blackboard" in order to adjust the lie angle with each iron. This will ensure that you will be catching each iron "flush" resulting in straight flying shots. You may surprise yourself in how well you hit the ball and also how your old clubs may have been the reason for errant shots. Also you'll be able to try various head shapes, shafts, swingweights etc...
With the woods Taylor,Nike, and Adams have clubs that can be adjusted while you use them.Good luck!
