  • Shorter shaft vs flatter lie?

Hi all. I'm coming to the realization that I need to get fitted for clubs. At this point, on my own, I have found that my standard length/lie clubs are not quite right for me. Using static measurements I found several places on the internet, they all say I should be standard length/standard lie.

I finally figured out, just from my address if nothing else, that the toe is up unless I hold my hands a few inches higher than I normally would at address or else push the hands way too far forward(in order to get square club face).

When I choke up a bit and stand closer to the ball, then the club addresses the ball flat and my shots became amazingly accurate, though I now feel somewhat like I'm having to bend forward more than I would prefer in order to do a more upright swing. But maybe that's a good thing to get used to?

I'm rather thinking at this point that I can play this way with my clubs choked up, or I can get custom fitted, likely ending up with standard length shafts and a degree flatter on the lie.

(yes I'm gonna try some and I'm gonna try to strike with tape to see the results, just asking for opinions at this point).

What consistently happens with these standard length/lie clubs is that if I don't choke up, then either I hit way too fat all the time or I stand further away and the lie is off. Or I can choke up and stand closer, which fixes the lie.

So the question becomes, should I stand closer and go for shorter length, standard lie, or should I keep standard length and custom order (after pro fitting of course), custom lie irons?

It kinda comes down, I think, to whether I want a flatter for more upright swing path and I have absolutely no idea. But I think I am more inclined to like the flatter swing path so that I don't have to bend over as far, not to mention that means longer shaft, more power.

What are thoughts on this issue?

With my driver I really don't know what to do because choking up and standing closer made a difference for my driver too, but I definitely don't like losing shaft length on that one. Yet it sounds like custom lies on drivers is not really an option anyway.

your expert opinions will be appreciated.

    gracias.

Re: Shorter shaft vs flatter lie?

    Hi Dude,

Regarding the toe up position of the clubhead at address, this is the norm condition. What happens is during the swing the shaft and clubhead droops (the shaft bows upward), resulting in the lie bottoming at the ground. So this toe up condition is a static condition at address, whereas the dynamic condition (swinging on a lie board with contact tape) will show with a actual swing.

Regarding your preference for a swing type, ie. flat or upright swing, you will have to be fitted dynamically in the act of swinging in the chosen fashion.

You can do a search for club droop and you will may find articles and photos to authenticate this.

As you note, the driver is most prominent in having the toe up. That is because the longer the club the more the droop.

Re: Shorter shaft vs flatter lie?

So had a round of golf with my new "choked up" grip and basically broke 90 for the first time in my life. I'm floored. I'm wondering if my slight choke up is actually where I'm supposed to be to begin with and perhaps before I was having my hands too far out at the ends of the grip? Dunno. Anyway, I'm not messing with it. Its working.

I went to a shop today and they had a lie board which I used to see where I'm at. I was basically using the same grip with their iron that I do with mine and the lie was dead center, so...I'm cool with that for now. When I can I will try to bring my own clubs to a lie board to measure and make absolutely sure, but I'm rather thinking standard lie/length is what has always made sense for me and perhaps I have not been gripping properly. Seems like a small thing, but an inch (or less) further down the grip, brings me closer to the ball, changes the shaft angle just enough to have less toe up at address and I'm hitting straighter than ever. I'm amazed actually. I'm also able to hit the ball straight with a lower trajectory now.

In the shop today a guy from Mizuno was there and they had a new little iron contraption that you basically swing once and it measures your swing speed, the toe drop as you're swinging, the tempo, the amount of snap at the top of your backswing, etc.. He told me I actually had very little toe drop with their test club, but I don't know..
