  • How to choose best GW/SW

I have been having some trouble finding the right GW and SW to match my play. Especially the GW. I find that often times the 3rd party wedges have stiffer and heavier shafts then what is on my PW. But I often need to use my GW like a PW, from 90-100 yds out and want it to feel about the same as my PW with just less distance.

In my case, my current clubs are no longer in production and impossible to find a used GW from my set. I'm thinking about new irons anyway, but the most likely candidate set is the Mizuno MP-52 which only goes down to PW. They don't even make a SW or GW in that design.

So what is the best way for me to go about getting a SW and GW. I have a cleveland CG-14 LW and it works fine for chips and such sometimes, but it definitely doesn't have the feel I want from my GW, particularly the shaft is just way too stiff/heavy for that full swing out from 100 yards.

I am tending to think I should get a SW and GW that is not part of a set and then just get used to using them forever along with whatever irons I have. Though if the iron set had a GW I would probably get it to feel similar to the PW of that set. I often find myself at 100 yds out with no good club.

    thoughts?

If you can find a GW the same make and model of your irons, then make sure it's 4° weaker than your PW. If it's a different model, then you'll likely find success with it only 2° weaker than your PW (then 4° gap to your SW). It's most important to remember that a GW isn't truly a wedge like your sand wedge or lob wedge. It's a PW that's been rebadged - treat it as such.

Yea so far that is what I have experienced already, I have a 52 degree zoid that always comes up short of what I need, so there' a gap between that and my PW.

Do you think I should try to get a std flex shaft GW, to match my irons or just get whatever comes in a wedge and assume less loft is what I'll need to hit the right distance?

Start with bending your Zoid to 50 degrees.

Then, when you're interested, you can get your irons heft-matched, and get the GW matched (shaft, grip, heft) to the iron set.

Hmm, I hadn't thought about bending the zoid. I will look into that. What does heft-matched mean?

heft matching refers to MOI or swingweight matching - a process which makes every club feel the same when swinging it.
